Yuri is seen as nice and outgoing, usually wanting her students to succeed and do their best. This changes once she finds that Reiji had attempted suicide with Nagi, and becomes overprotective and obsessed with him, going so far as waiting for Reiji to arrive home, and attempting to buy Reiji from his mother.

He is a high school student in an unnamed rural town along with his childhood friends Chako and Gen. While feeling hopeless about his future, he happens to meet Nagi Aoe, a member of up and coming idol group Acrylic of which he and Chako are both fans, at a convenience store near his house. After showing her around town, she offers to commit suicide with him at the Lover's Abyss.

Yuko Kurose's father was a debt-riddled, drunk, and abusive figure in the lives of both Yuko and her brother. While Yuko was still a young girl, her brother left home saying that he couldn't take living with their father any longer, and that eventually one of them would kill the other. Yuko pleaded with him to take her with, mentioning that their father would hit her, but he stated that he wouldn't be able to provide for himself and a girl. After this incident, Yuko firmly grasped onto an ideal that would stay with her for the rest of her life: "People shouldn't leave the places where they were born and raised." This idea was originally implanted by Yuko's great grandmother, while telling Yuko about the Lover's Abyss. Yuko's great grandmother cited the death of her daughter in the water as punishment for leaving the town.
