Chihaya Ayase

Chihaya Ayase (綾瀬 千早 Ayase Chihaya) is the protagonist of the Chihayafuru series. She is the daughter of Kenji Ayase and Chieko Ayase and the younger sister of Chitose Ayase who is a determined school girl that possesses remarkable hearing and she believes that by persevering in karuta where she will meet Arata Wataya (Chihaya's childhood friend) again that she begins a karuta club at her high school with Taichi Mashima (another one of her lifelong friend) with this goal in mind.

Taichi Mashima

真島太一

Taichi Mashima (真島 太一 Mashima Taichi) is the son of Reiko Mashima, the older brother of Rika Mashima and one of the childhood friends of Chihaya Ayase and Arata Wataya who is an all-around student as he is gifted in both studies and sports.

Arata Wataya

綿谷新

Arata Wataya (綿谷新 Wataya Arata) is a student from Fukui who once transferred to Chihaya Ayase's elementary school as a child. The grandson of a master karuta player, Arata inspired Chihaya to take up karuta by telling her that he thinks she has a talent for it.

Shinobu Wakamiya

若宮詩暢

Shinobu is a very beautiful and slim teenage girl with messy and wavy shoulder-length dark blue hair, full blue eyes that are accentuated by their upturned corners and a beauty mark under her left eye, in which her characteristics are fox-like as she carefully exudes a calm exterior when she plays her "silent karuta", but she has almost volatile, contradictory emotions inside. Her face, whether chubby or slim, is shown to have a very sharp defined quality meaning that she is a person who is more prone to speak with their body language rather words.

Hideo Harada

原田秀雄

Hideo Harada (原田 秀雄 Harada Hideo), also known as Dr. Harada or Harada-sensei, is the head of the Shiranami Society for karuta that Chihaya Ayase and Taichi Mashima are a part of. He used to teach Arata Wataya as well, while Arata was in primary school with Chihaya and Taichi. He taught Chihaya throughout Junior High School and is currently mentor to both Chihaya and Taichi. He is also a medical doctor.

Hajime Wataya

綿谷始

Hajime Wataya (綿谷始 Wataya Hajime) was the grandfather of Arata Wataya. He is known as the "Eternal Master Hajime". He reigned as a master of Karuta for 7 consecutive years during the 1980s. He was highly renowned and respected in the karuta world, and Arata is following in his footsteps.
