When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora. They were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does.
Ruka's dad and the other adults who work at the aquarium are only distantly aware of what the children are experiencing as they get caught up in the mystery of the worldwide disappearance of the oceans' fish.

MAINRuka is a pretty shy girl, as she tends to keep to herself more than not. Ruka is often able to be found alone walking around the streets, especially after she was suspended from handball practice. She does not seem to have a lot of compassion for others, besides Umi and later Sora. Her intuition is pretty good. According to both Umi and Sora, Ruka smells like, "the smell of seeing the same things." She is one of the few people to see the world as Umi and Sora do. However, Ruka is also very easily angered.

MAINUmi seems like a very energetic and happy young boy who will do anything for his friends and family. When meeting Ruka, he was quick to warm up to her and even began to grow feelings for Ruka. He is shown to be very close with his brother Sora.
