The idea for Devilman came about when Nagai was approached by Toei about adapting his manga 'Demon Lord Dante' to television, but wanted certain elements to be toned down and a more appealing main character.

As the state of the world grows bleaker and bleaker, Miki becomes the one ray of hope that motivates Akira in his battle against the demons. Unfortunately, Miki is savagely murdered by a group of humans out for demon blood, and Akira's faith in humanity dies with her.

Tare was a normal preteen boy. He has dark brown hair that changed in length over the course of the story, and large brown eyes. He frequently wore a backwards cap.

Noel is a middle aged man with brown hair, a lighter coloured moustache and goatee, jungle green eyes, and was average height and build.

Himmler's true demon form was that of a large blue bat like demon with a cat like head and horns. However the form he seemed to prefer was his human disguise. As Himura, he resembles a late teens boy with brown hair and spiked sideburns, blue jeans a white t-shirt with blue stripes, and a blue scarf. At times he also wore a bikers jacket with a black skull on the back.
