MAINDonkey Kong III, simply known as Donkey Kong or DK for short, is the main protagonist of the Donkey Kong series; the laid-back, stubborn, yet trustworthy and noble hero of Donkey Kong Island and the leader of the Kong Family. He is also a main racer in the Mario Kart series since Mario Kart 64 as well as the protagonist in the Donkey Kong Country animated series and a recurring character in the Mario Bros. game series and spinoff.

MAINDiddy Kong is the secondary Kong protagonist of the Donkey Kong series along with Donkey Kong. He is the fastest and most agile member of the Kong Family, a rather quick thinker on the fly, and Donkey Kong's eager best friend.

SUPPORTINGKing K. Rool, also called simply K. Rool, is the demented and unbalanced main villain of the Donkey Kong series. He is the malevolent ruler of the Kremling race (with defectors like Klubba or K. Lumsy being exceptions), the head of the Kremling Krew who constantly terrorizes the Kong Family, and also the arch-nemesis of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. K. Rool has repeatedly tried to steal the Kong's Banana Hoard, either to spite his enemies or to eat them once they've spoiled rotten (his favorite). To accomplish his evil goals, he has even gone as far as kidnapping or torturing members of the Kong Family.

SUPPORTINGCranky Kong (also known as DK Senior, Donkey Kong I, or Donkey Kong the First) is Donkey Kong's crabby, rambling grandfather, the original Donkey Kong in the 1981 arcade game, the widower of Wrinkly Kong and father of Donkey Kong Junior. Cranky has made numerous appearances throughout the Donkey Kong series. He usually acts as a guide in the games to help his grandson Donkey Kong or the other Kongs along their journey as he has had some enlightening experiences.

SUPPORTINGDixie Kong is a female Kong from the Donkey Kong series. She is Diddy Kong's girlfriend and Tiny Kong’s older sister. She also has two cousins, the 3 year old toddler Kiddy Kong and his older brother Chunky Kong. Her first appearance was as Diddy's partner in the game Donkey Kong Country 2. Aside from games, Dixie also appeared in the Donkey Kong Country animated series and in two comics as well.
