Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

攻殻機動隊STAND ALONE COMPLEX

In the not-too-distant future of 2032, the frontier dividing humans and machines has been crossed. Crimes comitted by flesh-and-metal cyborgs are investigated by Section 9, an elite counter-terrorist squad run by Chief Aramaki and his cyborg assistant, Major Motoko Kusanagi. Section 9 has faced countless adversaries in the real world and in cyberspace, but none like 'The Awakened.' It is believed that this lethal group of terrorists can take over the minds and bodies of almost anyone. Used as tools to commit crimes against the state, the victims are unaware of who or what is controlling them. When Major Kusanagi captures one of the victims, she hacks into his cyberbrain to learn the ringleader's identity-what she discovers leads her on a journey deep into the heart of cyberspace, a journey that shakes her to the core.

Batou

バトー

MAIN

Batou originally appeared in the manga authored by Masamune Shirow, serialized in Kodansha's Young Magazine Pirate Edition, from 1989 to 1991. Shirow's characterization of Batou, and indeed the other members of Section 9, is notably more light-hearted than the characterization used in Mamoru Oshii's films of the same name. He frequently jokes with Motoko, Togusa, the Fuchikomas, and practically everyone else who crosses his path. His serious side becomes much more pronounced in an episode of the manga where Yano, a trainee of Batou's, is murdered by a cyber-criminal named Koil Krasnov. Batou loses his temper and impulsively calls up Section 9 Chief Aramaki, demanding an explanation for Yano's death, then storms off announcing, "That . . . Koil is dead meat!" Unlike S.A.C., where in a similar situation Batou spares the life of an ex-C.I.A. operative, Batou makes good on his threat and personally terminates Koil. His appearance and style of dress varies considerably over the series' run.

Tachikoma

タチコマ

MAIN

A Tachikoma (タチコマ) is an AI walker/roller tank in the Ghost in the Shell universe, appearing in the original manga and also in the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex sub-universe. They are best described as a "spider type multi leg/multi ped combat vehicle equipped with artificial intelligence", possessing the ability to act as both personnel transport units and mobile weapons platforms. Section 9 possesses 9 of these think tanks.

Togusa

Togusa

トグサ

MAIN

Togusa is married and has a young daughter, although it depends on the incarnation; in the S.A.C. universe, he also has a daughter. Togusa's personality varies somewhat between the manga, movies, and series. His personality in the manga he tends to be more emotional and plagued with feelings of failure; in the movies he is savvier but aware of his inexperience, and in the Stand Alone Complex his personality is a combination of the two. He also tends to be very temperamental and emotional, getting so outraged at one criminal committing murder right under his nose in an episode of Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG, that he seriously wounded the criminal and ends up on trial. He seems to be very friendly with Batou and he was arguably the one who cracked the Laughing Man case.

SUPPORTING

Kusanagi's various incarnations in the manga, movies, and TV series all portray her differently. Since each of these has an independent storyline, Kusanagi's physical and mental characteristics have been modified in different ways.
