Luigi is Mario's younger twin brother, the secondary protagonist of the Mario franchise, and the main protagonist of the Luigi's Mansion series. Throughout his life, he has lived in Mario's shadow, developing both cowardly and heroic tendencies. Despite this, Luigi has helped and fought alongside his brother on many occasions. Mario Bros. for the Game & Watch marked his first appearance, in which he is an exact copy of Mario. He went on to gain a different color and be used to facilitate a second-player option. However, as Luigi established himself throughout the Mario franchise, he gained his own identity as a character.

Mario is the main character and titular protagonist of the long-running and highly successful video game franchise of the same name. He was created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and serves as the main mascot of Nintendo. Mario was first introduced in the Donkey Kong franchise as the protagonist of the arcade game Donkey Kong, released in 1981 (in which he took the alias "Jumpman"). Mario would receive his own franchise in 1983 with the release of the Game & Watch title Mario Bros.

Yoshi (full name: T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas) is a dinosaur-like character who acts as an ally of Mario and Luigi and is the protagonist of his own franchise. He first appears in Super Mario World.

Koopas (once "the Koopa") are a category of turtle-like creatures that form the Turtle Tribe (also known as the Koopa clan or Koopa tribe). There are many different types of Koopas, the most common being Koopa Troopas; they are specifically named for the species that Bowser belongs to due to an inconsistency in localization.

Donkey Kong III, simply known as Donkey Kong or DK for short, is the main protagonist of the Donkey Kong series; the laid-back, stubborn, yet trustworthy and noble hero of Donkey Kong Island and the leader of the Kong Family. He is also a main racer in the Mario Kart series since Mario Kart 64 as well as the protagonist in the Donkey Kong Country animated series and a recurring character in the Mario Bros. game series and spinoff.
