Beneath the sun, which burns flesh yet gives life, and the Nile River, which swallows the earth yet carries life, the Egyptians viewed the world as divided between chaos and order. Ra, the sun god, slays chaos and establishes order upon the blood of chaos,
but the order built upon that blood becomes a yoke that binds Ra himself, and the throne of the gods, established under that order,
is gradually stained with strife and blood. At the center of the order established by Ra, Ma’at, the goddess of order, asks Ra:
“What is your order?”
