Jounetsu no Penguin Gohan
情熱のペンギンごはん
Often cited as the origin of the heta-uma (or 'bad but good' ) style of manga art, Penguin Gohan is a classic Garo gag manga featuring the crude, lewd, and gory exploits of a penguin and his family. It is a wild anthology of 20 surreal stories characterized by a grotesque humor bordering on ero-guro and nonsense.
In Penguin Gohan, the literary genius of the eclectic Shigesato Itoi combines with the singular art of Teruhiko Yumura, one of the greatest masters of Japanese underground illustration.
The series has been published three times since its original run in Garo, and each edition has been slightly different: first by JOHO Center Publishing in 1980 (Jounetsu no Penguin Gohan), by Chikuma Bunko in 1993 (Kanpon Jounetsu no Penguin Gohan), and by Hobonichi Books in 2011 (Sayonara Penguin).
