When Moe moved from Kanami to the Kawato neighborhood after marriage, she was unpopular with her new family because of a series of failures, such as burning the rice and letting the yubeshi (sweet tofu) get moldy. Although she did not know it until she realized that she was being snubbed, her mother-in-law Fujiko is notorious as "the meanest lady in Kawato."

Feeling depressed, Moe learns from the in-the-know wife Sayaka that she actually places fourth amongst the local ranking of the ten married women in the neighborhood. People sympathized with Moe for having to deal with the "meanest lady in Kawato" but she still had to bear the burden alone. Feeling like the other wives in the neighborhood might face similar problems, Moe decides to visit the other nine women on the list to see if they can help support each other.
