Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

The boy who is given the codename Heero Yuy is of Japanese descent, a complicated character. His cold, stoic demeanor seems more fitting for a battle hardened veteran than a fifteen-year-old boy. When Relena Peacecraft meets Doctor J, the engineer comments that Heero is actually a very kind-hearted young man who keeps his emotions reined in while fighting. On many occasions, Heero espouses the philosophy that being emotional on the battlefield will only result in heartbreak, so soldiers need to be able to fight without caring about their opponents. However, he believes that there's nothing wrong with showing emotion in normal situations. The most important philosophy to Heero's life, however, is the one his father Odin Lowe espouses: That the best way to live life is by one's emotions. Heero is the most skilled and focused in combat out of the five pilots, both in mobile suits and out, which makes him a great asset and a deadly force to be reckoned with.

デュオ・マックスウェル

Duo is the pilot of XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe. He wears his hair in a thigh-length braid and his signature outfit is a pair of dark, flared jodhpurs and a cassock-style shirt with a white turtleneck shirt underneath (giving it the appearance of a clerical collar). In the Endless Waltz movie, Duo wears what seems to be a red-zippered turtleneck underneath a leather motorcycle jacket with the sleeves rolled up. He is an expert salvager and a member of The Sweeper Group, a group of salvagers and tinkerers.

リリーナ・ピースクラフト

Once a rich, wistful girl, Relena grows more mature throughout the series as she learns the truth about her past and takes an active role in rebuilding the future. She eventually dedicates her life to the pacifism preached by her family, but admits in the OVA Endless Waltz that peace cannot be gained simply by handing it to the people and that some fighting is necessary. From early on, she appears to fall in love with Heero Yuy as she goes to great lengths just to be near him throughout the events of Gundam Wing. While their personalities conflict, as Heero is a soldier living only to fight while she is a pacifist (or Heero is seemingly without emotions while she becomes quite emotional several times in the series), Heero also appears to become quite close to her over time and vows to protect her even if it means his death. She is also exceptionally kind as, even after Heero first threatened to kill her when she learned of his secret mission and drastically changed her life, she remained a very close ally and friend of the grief-stricken Gundam pilot. Their rather unique relationship ultimately leads to them getting married at the end of the photo novel Frozen Teardrop.

カトル・ラバーバ・ウィナー

Out of all of the Gundam Pilots, Quatre seems the most well-adjusted of the group, generally displaying a kind, humble personality, as shown in the Japanese version, he uses the personal pronoun "Boku", a humble but weaker pronoun, compared to the pronoun "ore" that the other pilots use. As a firm believer in the ideals of pacifism, he is a reluctant soldier who often expresses sorrow whenever he is forced to kill his enemies.

トロワ・バートン

The most experienced soldier of the Gundam pilots, and the only one born on Earth, Trowa is a quiet but determined person. Patient and calm, he will analyze a situation before acting. He hides his feelings well behind an impassive mask. Despite his stoic demeanor, Trowa developed a close friendship with Quatre Raberba Winner. Symbolically, Trowa is often affiliated with masks; not only because of his neutrality and his talent for infiltrating enemy ranks, but also because of his job as a circus clown—a job where he wears a costume and painted mask. Trowa is also shown to have a strong connection with animals, evidenced by when he first joined the circus. On the battlefield, Trowa attacks his enemies with utter ruthlessness and deadly accuracy.

張五飛

Wufei is a conflicted character. While he remains calm in many situations that would concern his fellows, he's also prone to angry emotional outbursts in response to many things, such as conflict ideologies and female opponents. He tends not to care what others think of him or his ideas and takes direct action even when he is uncertain.

ドモン・カッシュ

Domon was brash, impulsive, emotional, and extremely impatient. Due to his upbringing in isolation since childhood, he had a deep lack of social skills and was very prone to letting his emotions overcome his better judgement. These difficulties were usually leveled off by his partner Rain Mikamura's even-keeled personality, though he often chose to act directly without her involvement, which often lead to intense confrontations. Domon was also highly determined to free his father from his frozen imprisonment and find out why Kyoji had stolen the Devil Gundam. Despite the obsession that Domon demonstrated about his mission, he possessed a strong sense of justice, and would usually set aside his own mission when the weak and powerless required his protection.

ゼクス・マーキス

Full of pride and self-loathing, living the life of a soldier has brought great internal conflict to Zechs. Despite his reputation as a great mobile pilot, Zechs feels that he has betrayed himself and his father's ideals. As a result of his many battles, he believes that he is not worthy to his family name, as his life as a soldier contradicts his father's pacifistic ideals. This is shown when Treize referred to him as "Milliardo Peacecraft" his real name to which Zechs responded to with great shame. He is often seen struggling between chivalry and the professionalism of a modern soldier who carries out destruction and killing in a rational and efficient manner. This internal conflict was what drove his motives as he struggled to find the balance between his former identity as his father's son, and the uncompromised warrior that he felt he needed to become. This led him into getting kicked out of OZ and eventually being in charge of the White Fang. Declaring war on the Earth using the battleship Libra, his main objective over targeting the Earth was to stop humanity from fighting each other and to have his sister Relena lead the people in a new age of peace. However, it was also a test he put on himself to become a relentless warrior. It is not until he fights Heero at the end of the Eve Wars that he accepts that he was once again defeated by Heero, and convinced that Heero and the others were capable of carrying out their ideal of peace. Later, he pledged to continue acting as a warrior, however, this time for keeping peace in the world, thus finally reconciling his two identities into one.

ドロシー・カタロニア

Dorothy is the antithesis of Relena Peacecraft; whereas Relena advocates total pacifism, Dorothy speaks in praise of fighting. However, her real purpose was to make people think that they never want to fight another war by causing a tragic and terrible war. She believed that the more tragic the conflict, the more fear and loathing of war would arise in the hearts of the people. Her words and actions of longing for war were in fact a strong reversal of her true feelings of aversion to conflict and desire for peace more than anyone else.

ドクターJ

Doctor J is arguably the most eccentric of the Gundam engineers and if often heard making unusual remarks. He shares an avuncular relationship with Heero (it was he who chose Heero's codename) and is very much devoted to destroying his enemies, most notably OZ.
