He is a high-level flying white wolf daiyokai and commonly takes the form of a maneki-neko (招き猫, "beckoning cat"). He acts as Natsume's bodyguard on the condition that when Natsume dies, he will inherit the Book of Friends, thus giving him control over dozens of youkai and ayakashi.

名取周一

He is the head of the Natori exorcist clan and later becomes Natsume's good friend. He eventually learns about the Book of Friends, thinking that such a dangerous artifact should be better off destroyed. He may be planning to find some way to release Natsume from the Book of Friends heavy burden. Due to genuinely caring about Natsume and his wellbeing, he tries to conceal the heavy burden Takashi's renowned exorcist grandmother had left him from Matoba, who would most certainly abuse it and Natsume to his every advantage.

多軌透

She is one of Takashi Natsume's best friends and schoolmate, as well as one of the few humans who knows Natsume can see youkai. She herself cannot see them, but they are visible to her and other humans if a youkai steps inside her spell circle that she inherited from her late grandfather.

He is extremely large in terms of size, even in comparison with the other giant youkai in the series. Misuzu is a water horse ayakashi with black skin and has a horse's head. He wears a lavender-colored kimono while his right ears are pierced with two golden rings whilst the left has been additionally pierced with three small bells. His right hand is that of a bull hoof while his left hand is a human-like hand with two golden bangles.

北本篤史

He is a first year high school student at Takashi Natsume's school and was one of the first friends Natsume made when he first moved in, although he doesn't know about his ability to see yokai. He is also the best friend of Satoru Nishimura. Natsume initially rejects their overtures of friendship due to the fear of his ability being found out, but he eventually becomes friends with Kitamoto and Nishimura, although they hang out more often with each other than Natsume.

西村悟

He is a first year high school student at Takashi Natsume's school and one of his classmates in Class 2. Satoru was the first friend Takashi made when he first moved in town, although he doesn't know about his ability to see Youkai. He is also the best friend of Atsushi Kitamoto.

笹田純

She is the class president of Takashi Natsume's first-year class, Class 2. Sasada suspects that Natsume can see yokai, although he repeatedly denies this to her.

津村容莉枝

Since her childhood, Yorie has always had shoulder-length brown hair with bangs that cover the left and right side of her forehead. She started wearing eyeglasses on her middle high school times.
