星野八郎太

Hachirota Hoshino (星野 八郎太, Hoshino Hachirōta), often called Hachimaki (鉢巻, Hachimaki) or just Hachi (はち, Hachi), is the protagonist of the anime as well as the manga. A twenty-five year old debris collector, Hachimaki starts out a little full of himself as he trains Ai Tanabe to perform EVA work, while his ego and hotheadedness are not exactly an asset he is able to provide her with a solid mentor figure in addition to a good understanding of EVA operations. His own mentor was former astronaut and fellow debris hauler Gigalt Gangaragash, who gave him the nickname of "Hachimaki". As the series progresses Hachi enlists himself into the Jovian expedition in an attempt to join the crew of the nuclear fusion powered spacecraft, the Wernher von Braun, on its history-making voyage to Jupiter.

Ai Tanabe always dreamed of working in space, and that dream comes true in an unexpected way: her initial assignment is to Debris Section, where she becomes the partner of veteran astronaut (and eventual love interest) Hachimaki in what essentially amounts to space garbage collecting.

Goro Hoshino (星野 五郎, Hoshino Gorō) is a character from Planetes. He is the husband of Haruko Hoshino and the father of Hachirota "Hachimaki" Hoshino and Kyutaro Hoshino.

男爵

A highly eccentric debris collector, The Baron sports a pompadour and claims to be an alien from the planet Rectile. He is socially awkward and writes his notes about etiquette, observations, and human interaction in his small notebook.

Kyutaro Hoshino is Hachimaki's younger brother, currently a high school student on Earth and an amateur rocket maker. Kyutaro considers Hachimaki an "insincere astronaut", as he feels that Hachi's role as a debris hauler does not warrant the title and the connotations that come with it. This echoes a sentiment expressed early on by (a completely inexperienced) Ai Tanabe. Any conversation between the two almost always degenerates into a brawl as they argue over their differing perspectives on space. Kyutaro hopes to eventually become an engineer to design larger and more powerful rockets that would allow humanity to push its boundaries further into the solar system.
