When timid eleventh-grader and math genius Kenji Koiso (Ryunosuke Kamiki) is asked by older student and secret crush Natsuki (Nanami Sakuraba) to come with her to her family’s Nagano home for a summer job, he agrees without hesitation. Natsuki’s family, the Jinnouchi clan, dates back to the Muromachi era (1336 to 1573), and they’ve all come together to celebrate the 90th birthday of the spunky matriarch of the family, Sakae. That’s when Kenji discovers his “summer job” is to pretend to be Natsuki’s fiance and dance with her at the birthday celebration. As Kenji attempts to keep up with Natsuki’s act around her family, he receives a strange math problem on his cell phone which, being a math genius, he can’t resist solving. As it turns out, the solution to the mysterious equation causes a bizarre parallel world to collide with Earth, and it’s up to Kenji and his new fake family to put reality back in order.

MAINKazuma Ikezawa (池沢 佳主馬 Ikezawa Kazuma) is the deuteragonist of Summer Wars, whose avatar is King Kazma, a renowned program/martial artist in OZ. He is a second cousin of Natsuki Shinohara. Kazuma is also a hikikomori who seldom leaves his room and uses his talents to win every game in OZ. But it's hinted that he does have friends, as more a spin-off manga made after Summer Wars telling about how he was able to become King Kazma.

MAINKenji Koiso (小磯 健二 Koiso Kenji) is the main protagonist of Summer Wars. He is a math-savvy 2nd year high school student (11th grade) and a moderator of the interactive computer world OZ along with Takashi Sakuma (Kenji's close friend). Kenji is less skilled in dealing with people. Kenji is invited by Natsuki Shinohara (Kenji's friend and the girl of his dreams) for Sakae Jinnouchi's 90th birthday with him being her fake fiance for the family reunion. After receiving a cryptic code on his cell phone and cracking it, he becomes a primary suspect for hacking into OZ.
