After Sword Art Online was cleared, Asuna transferred her SAO avatar to ALfheim Online and began playing the game as an Undine. Due to her tendency to charge into battle with a rapier despite being a healer, she has earned the nickname «Berserk Healer» (バーサクヒーラー, Bāsaku Hīrā). Asuna has also created an alternative avatar, the Sylph «Erika» (エリカ, Erika), as she sometimes wanted to change her appearance.

Kazuto Kirigaya

Kirito was chosen to be one of the one thousand beta testers for the closed beta of Sword Art Online, the first ever Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) for the NerveGear, and later joined the official version of the game. He thus became one of the 10,000 players who were trapped in Sword Art Online, where he remained a solo player for the majority of the game, willingly taking on the role of a Beater to reduce discrimination against other former beta testers, as well as actively taking part in Boss battles as one of the Clearers. Kirito temporarily became a member of the Moonlit Black Cats after helping them safely escape a dangerous dungeon, but returned to being a solo player when a fatal error resulted in the death of the other guild members. At some point in the game, Kirito became known as the «Black Swordsman» (黒の剣士, Kuro no Kenshi) due to his tendency to wear black clothing. Near the end of the game, Kirito joined the Knights of the Blood due to losing a wager with its leader, Heathcliff. Kirito eventually put an end to the game by defeating the final boss, thus clearing the game.

Yui had long, dark hair and bright black eyes. Her default equipment consisted of a one-piece white dress with a ribbon tied around her waist. She temporarily wore a long-sleeved pink sweater and a purple skirt, as well as red shoes (brown boots in the anime), during her time with Kirito and Asuna.

Andrew Gilbert Mills

Andrew is a massive and bulky African-American man with a brown goatee and brown eyes. He is bald and wears two silver earrings on his left ear in both Sword Art Online and the real world. At the beginning of the Sword Art Online official service, Agil wore a breastplate over a sleeveless shirt, light brown pants, and fur boots. By the end of the Sword Art Online Incident, he wore jungle green robes and gray armor while in combat. In the real world, Andrew wears a white shirt and a dark gray apron over pants of the same color. Kirigaya Kazuto also commented that he is as large in real life as he is in-game.

As his avatar Heathcliff, Akihiko eventually founded what later became Sword Art Online's strongest guild, the «Knights of the Blood». He was the owner of the first «Unique Skill», named «Holy Sword», and was considered to be strongest player in-game. He wielded the collective one-handed sword and tower shield called Liberator. He also was able to engage the boss of the 50 Floor in battle for ten minutes by himself, which earned him the title «Man of Legend» (伝説の男, Densetsu no Otoko). It was also rumored that Heathcliff's hit points (HP) had never reached the yellow zone.

Kikouka Seijirou was an investigator in the «Sword Art Online Case Victims Rescue Force», and the one who told Kirigaya Kazuto which hospital Yuuki Asuna was in. Though he is stated to be part of the virtual division, Kazuto suspects he is part of the JSDF after tailing him. He takes advantage of Kazuto's gratitude by using him as an investigator for issues, and uses other people like watchdogs over the VR network.

An Si-eun's avatar has long, light-blue hair which is almost pure white, one of the most defining feature of Undine players. She also has calm deep-blue eyes shining radiantly beneath her drooping eyelashes, a long nose, lustrous lips and surprisingly slender body, all of which give off the feeling of an excellent Undine healer.
