Yami Yugi, known as Dark Yugi in the manga and Japanese versions, and also referred to as the Nameless Pharaoh, is the spirit of Pharaoh Atem that has been sealed in the Millennium Puzzle. He is the main protagonist of the original and second series, along with Yugi Muto.

城之内克也

Joseph "Joey" Wheeler, known as Katsuya Jonouchi (城 (じょう) 之 (の) 内 (うち) 克 (かつ) 也 (や) Jōnouchi Katsuya) in the manga and Japanese version, is one of the main characters in Yu-Gi-Oh!. He is best friends with Yugi Muto. Joey starts out as an inexperienced Duelist, but he later becomes one of the greatest Duelists in the world. He accompanies Yugi throughout his adventures.

武藤遊戯

Yugi possessed the three thousand-year-old (five thousand in the dub) mystical Millennium Puzzle, which allowed his body to bear host to the spirit of the Puzzle, Yami Yugi. Yugi was initially unaware of his existence and control of Yugi's body, and would involuntarily shift to Yami Yugi at trying times.

マリク・イシュタール

Marik Ishtar (マリク・イシュタール Mariku Ishutāru lit. "Malick Ishtar") is the leader and founder of the Rare Hunters, younger brother of Ishizu Ishtar, the adoptive younger brother of Odion, and heir to the Tomb Keepers. Marik was the main antagonist of the Battle City arc, until the defeat of Odion when Marik's split-personality, Yami Marik, took over his body and replaced him as the main antagonist. Marik was eventually able to regain control of his body and destroy his other self once and for all, redeeming himself in the process.

真崎杏子

In the manga, Anzu originally had a conventional, short hairstyle. Her first color image, seen in Duel 1, featured dark brown hair and amber eyes. As Takahashi continued drawing the manga, Anzu gained more feminine and cute facial features. Her hair style became longer and less conventional. Color images from Volume 3 and onward portray her hair as a lighter brown color. Sometimes her eyes are blue and sometimes they are reddish brown. By the final volume of the manga, Anzu's hair touches her shoulders. Anzu's usual outfit is the standard female Domino High School uniform, consisting of a pink coat, a white oxford shirt, a blue tie, and a blue pleated skirt, though she does not stick to any usual casual outfit and wears several throughout the series.

本田ヒロト

Tristan Taylor, known as Hiroto Honda (本 (ほん) 田 (だ) ヒロト Honda Hiroto) in the Japanese version, is in class 1-B at Domino High School and a friend of Yugi Muto, Joey Wheeler, Téa Gardner and Bakura Ryou.

After his hunger was sated he had the power to "grant your wish." After bringing Yugi and his friends to the Pharaoh's tomb he vanished and seemed to know a lot more about the situation than he initially claimed.
