MAINLink's debut occurred in the 1986 action-adventure title The Legend of Zelda, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (originally in Japan on the Family Computer Disk System). Since that inaugural appearance, he has been a constant presence in virtually all mainline entries in the franchise, with the sole exceptions being the Japan-exclusive Satellaview titles, which are regarded as non-canonical.

MAINThe mortal incarnation of the Goddess Hylia, Zelda was chosen by destiny to be the keeper of the Triforce of Wisdom, which is the main reason she plays such an integral role in the legends of Hyrule, much like Link does with the Triforce of Courage or Ganon with the Triforce of Power. Just like the former, Princess Zelda is not a single individual within the franchise, but rather various individuals incarnated with the same name that have appeared across the history of Hyrule. Unlike Link, however, all of the iterations of the character belong to the same familial bloodline. Like Ganon, she also has had a couple of alter-egos such as Sheik and Tetra. Whilst each Zelda is distinct, the "fundamental soul" of the character Hylia has endured throughout each generation.
