Tetsuo Shima (島鉄雄 Shima Tetsuo) was a member of a teenage biker gang and the main antagonist of Akira. After a near-collision with Takashi and being experimented by the Japanese military government, he rapidly develops powerful psychic abilities. Tetsuo goes on a power trip as his newfound abilities grow, eventually leading him to his own destruction.

Takashi (タカシ), designated No. 27, is a member of the Espers, a group of psychic children cared for by the government of Neo-Tokyo. He plays an important role in Tetsuo Shima's psychic awakening as well as Neo-Tokyo's destruction.

キヨコ

Kiyoko (キヨコ), designated No. 25, is a member of the Espers, a group of psychic children cared for by the government. Her psychic predictions concerning the fall of Neo-Tokyo fueled a majority of the plot of the original manga.

マサル

Masaru (マサル), designated No. 27, is a member of the Espers. Technically speaking, Masaru is seemingly the leader of the Espers, although the real leader of the group is his friend, Kiyoko. In the manga, it was he who finds Akira on an experimenting table, hooked up to various machines.

Nezu's early life was never shown in either the anime or the manga, but details were provided in an event timeline published in the book 'Poster & Graphic AKIRA'. Born in Chiba Prefecture as the third son of farmers, he got excellent grades growing up and later enrolled in law school. However, following the events of The Third World War, universities were forced to pause operation, and during this time he began to study life as a black marketeer, becoming familiar with the people of this underworld. Six years later, he was able to return to school, eventually passing the bar examination and becoming a lawyer.
