MAINMisao Usui (née Harada), also known as the "Bride of Prophecy" or the "Senka Maiden", is the main character of Black Bird. She is a teenage girl who can see supernatural beings like demons because of this. Any demon who drinks her blood extends their life, any demon who eats her flesh gains external life and any demon who makes her his bride will bring prosperity (wealth, success, profitability, affluence, riches, opulence, the good life, (good) fortune, ease, plenty, welfare, comfort, security, well-being) to his clan.

SUPPORTINGZenki [ 剛 / 前 鬼 ] is one of the Eight Great Tengu. He looks scary but is really an easygoing and a funny person. He loves and protects children who lost their families, particularly at Hiyokuin. His real name is Goh. Zenki is unable to control his demon powers so he has a tattoo and earrings which are used as seals to contain his power; a seal is added every year as the power grows stronger every year. Zenki hates to bring harm to the village or to the children that he loves.

SUPPORTINGHe is the younger triplet of his other brothers. His hair is very springy-curled like an Afro. This is best expressed when Misao gives each of the triplets a hat for the Winter Holidays. While his brothers fit well under their hats, his proves resistant, refusing to stay on no matter how much Misao repeatedly tries to affix it upon his head. Six years into the future after the delivery of Sou, he is shown to be much taller and has dreadlocks instead of his earlier afro appearance.
Yoshio is Misao 's father. He is a bit eccentric and teaches folklore and human studies at a university. Misao thinks of him as an overprotective father but still loves him.
