藤原拓海

He acts as the delivery boy for his father's tofu business, driving his father's Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX (AE86) up to the top of the mountain every morning to deliver tofu to the hotels for the day. After defeating Keisuke Takahashi in an impromptu battle he was nicknamed the "White Ghost of Akina" and began racing on his own, occasionally representing the Akina SpeedStars in battle. He was eventually invited to join Project D as their downhill ace.

高橋涼介

Ryosuke Takahashi (高橋 涼介, Takahashi Ryōsuke, known as Ry in the Tokyopop version) is the founder, and leader of both the Akagi RedSuns and Project D. Famously nicknamed Akagi's White Comet (赤城の白い彗星, Akagi no Shiroi Suisei), Ryosuke created the RedSuns with the purpose of dominating the street racing scene all over Japan, recruiting his brother Keisuke and others local to Mount Akagi to achieve this goal.

高橋啓介

An ex-bosozoku gang member, he was introduced to street racing by his brother Ryosuke and joined his team, the Akagi RedSuns, and soon became their second best driver in his Mazda ɛ̃fini RX-7 Type R (FD3S). He and his brother are nicknamed "The Rotary Brothers", as they both drive cars with rotary engines. During the RedSuns expedition to Akina, he was defeated by Takumi Fujiwara in an impromptu battle, an event that helped kickstart Fujiwara's racing career and created a rivalry between the two. He was invited by his brother to join Project D as their uphill ace.

藤原文太

Bunta was the original driver of the mysterious "white ghost of Akina" AE86 Sprinter Trueno that holds the record of the fastest downhill time at Akina. Bunta has a unique way of training his son to drive - every morning when Takumi delivers tofu. Bunta gives Takumi a cup of water which is placed in the drink holder; Takumi must not spill even a drop of it while he is driving. This is ostensibly to prevent breaking the tofu in the boot, but it forces Takumi to drive very smoothly. As for Bunta, he is still considered the best downhill racer in Akina, which is shown early in the series when he pushes the Trueno with Yuichi Tachibana in the passenger seat, lighting a cigarette while drifting around a corner.

中里毅

Takeshi Nakazato (中里 毅 Nakazato Takeshi, known as Zack in the Tokyopop version) is the leader of the Myogi NightKids. He made his first appearance at the race in Akina where Keisuke Takahashi of the RedSuns is to race against Takumi Fujiwara. Surprised that Takumi could defeat Keisuke, Takeshi decides that he is going to be the one to challenge and defeat the "Akina downhill specialist", and that the RedSuns are next on his list.

沙雪

Sayuki is a cheerful, outgoing girl always looking for good looking men. She's extremely flirtatious and loves to tease men and Mako herself, and also develops a small crush on Takumi Fujiwara after her and Mako's race against him. As Mako's navigator/co-driver, she is responsible for necessary callouts that may inform Mako of something important; for example, obstacles in the course, oncoming traffic, specific braking zones, etc. Notably in the race against Takumi, she instructed Mako to spin out after she entered a corner too quickly and sharply, preventing to recover safely.

小柏カイ

He was a go-kart racer from the age of 8 and later had a brief stint as a street racer (originally on motorcycles, then later in cars) before becoming a professional racer and joining Katagiri. He originally drove his father's Toyota MR2, before getting his own Toyota MR-S when he became a professional.

秋山延彦

He is very intelligent and analytical, but his skills as a driver are comparatively very poor. Because of this, he usually recruits other highly skilled drivers and uses his technical data to further tune their cars according to each course. Nobuhiko did race against Takumi Fujiwara once on the downhill, but he was left behind after the first hairpin and only because Takumi was letting him keep up, upon Ryosuke Takahashi's instruction. Upon knowing he is no match for him, he and Wataru later recruited Sakamoto, a rally racer to the Northern Saitama Alliance in an attempt to defeat Takumi Fujiwara.

小柏健

After couple of years of not racing against his undefeatable opponent. He was told by his son that he witnessed a similar AE86 drifting aside from his car. Kai thought that it was supposed to be Bunta passing by. However, when the secret was revealed, Bunta lied to him that Takumi was actually delivering with his AE86 even though it wasn't Takumi after all. Ken then scheduled the race between his son and Takumi and told Kai to use his special technique to tackle against corners more efficiently. His son didn't manage to win although he followed his father's orders.

弘道

He is first seen with Shoichi and Akio at the top of Akina, hoping to see the Eight-Six that beat Takeshi Nakazato. They noticed something coming towards them, wondering if it was they were looking for, only to be disappointed that it was another car. Of the trio of street racers, Hiromichi is the most outspoken, as he threatened to call the police on Takumi and Itsuki if they were too underaged to drive. He then proceeded to criticize Itsuki's car, saying that he knows nothing about how to keep an Eight-Six. When Itsuki reveals that his car was really just an Eight-Five, he taunts Itsuki by claiming that mufflers for an Eight-Five are no longer in production. As they take their leave, Hiromichi jokingly tells Itsuki to avoid getting tailgated by a scooter.
