Rei Kiriyama is a child prodigy. Rei Kiriyama is also an orphan who lives alone in an empty apartment. Rei Kiriyama is a teen working in an adult's world. Life is complicated for Rei. He's an up-and-coming shogi player on the verge of turning pro, but he has no homelife, or much of a life period, outside his board game, but thankfully with the help of some life-long friends he has an opportunity start all over again.

MAINRei Kiriyama (桐山 零, Kiriyama Rei) is the main protagonist whose progression is explored through the series. He is a teenage professional shogi player, currently ranked at 5th-dan (6th dan in the later part of the manga). He is widely lauded in the shogi community as the fifth shogi player to become a professional in middle school. Using his salary combined with his life savings, he lives in own apartment while juggling between his official matches and high school. By the time the story begins, Rei is also a frequent visitor of the Kawamoto residence where the family treats him as one of their own despite his initial reluctance to become close with them.
川本ひなた
MAINHinata Kawamoto (川本 ひなた, Kawamoto Hinata), often called Hina, is one of the main character of the March Comes in Like a Lion series. She is the middle child of the Kawamoto sisters and a middle school student whose positive attitude inspires Rei Kiriyama to try to overcome his depression.

SUPPORTINGTouji Souya (宗谷 冬司 Sōya Tōji) is a professional shogi player who holds the title of Meijin. He is one of five shogi players in history who went pro in middle school, and he became the youngest Meijin ever. His appearance hasn't changed much since he was a teenager, so he looks very young. He has been compared to a god in shogi, but he's a bit absent-minded. After his match with Kiriyama, it was revealed that he has some sort of intermittent hearing loss of unknown cause. He lives in Kyoto with his grandmother, their housekeeper Tama-chan and her son.
