Shouya is a bully. When Shouko, a girl who can't hear, enters his elementary school class, she becomes their favorite target, and Shouya and his friends goad each other into devising new tortures for her. But the children's cruelty goes too far. Shouko is forced to leave the school, and Shouya ends up shouldering all the blame. Six years later, the two meet again. Can Shouya make up for his past mistakes, or is it too late?

SUPPORTINGGenki comes off as a friendly and pleasant guy when Shōya first meets him, but that quickly changes after Shōya punches Genki's younger brother (referred to as “Deluxe”) for stealing his shoes. Genki retaliates by uppercutting Shōya in the gut the next time he sees him, leaving Shōya covered in bruises after he is lifted into the air by the punch and lands flat on the pavement. At this point, Shōya’s sister had moved on to Pedro, so Genki isn’t seen after this.
