Chroma are bounty hunters for hire that deal with all manner of requests, including monster subjugation. A thirteen-year-old girl named Marona lives on Phantom Isle after losing both of her parents at a young age. Her parents had lost their lives during their jobs as Chroma and now she must become a Chroma to earn money. However, work as a Chroma is difficult and many hold her in disdain as the 'Cursed Girl' because of her ability to talk to and manipulate phantoms.
Thankfully, she's not alone since she has the help of the phantom named Ash, a friend of her parents that had died alongside them in a mission. Marona's parents' dying wish for Ash was to have him protect their daughter. Now Ash does everything he can to help defend Marona from the hardships of the world.

MAINMarona is a 13 year old Chroma with the power to talk to Phantoms. It was passed down from her parents. Because of her special ability, she is despised by most citizens in Ivoire and has violent abuse thrown at her. She acts like she doesn't care, and says that someday those same people who loathe her will come to like her and need her. She appears in both Phantom Brave and Phantom Brave: We Meet Again. as well as in 5 alternate NIS games.

MAINAsh was originally a Chroma alongside Marona's parents, and was also killed when they were. However, Haze (Marona's father) used his final burst of power to grant Ash immortality as a Phantom. Now trapped between life and death, he serves as Marona's guardian throughout the game. During the main storyline, he checks Marona's mail every day and disposes of any insulting mail aimed at her due to her "possessed" status. He and Marona travel to various regions during the game, helping those in need, with Ash acting as Marona's advisor as well as the head of her Phantom fighting force. When the player visits the Isle of Healing Waters, Ash come face-to-face with his murderer, a Wraith under Sulphur's service. Later in the game, his secret pertaining to the insulting mail is revealed, but Marona's faith in him does not waver. Near the end of the game, he fights the Wraith one last time, killing it for good. He then fights and helps Marona defeat Sulphur.
