After Sword Art Online was cleared, Asuna transferred her SAO avatar to ALfheim Online and began playing the game as an Undine. Due to her tendency to charge into battle with a rapier despite being a healer, she has earned the nickname «Berserk Healer» (バーサクヒーラー, Bāsaku Hīrā). Asuna has also created an alternative avatar, the Sylph «Erika» (エリカ, Erika), as she sometimes wanted to change her appearance.

Kirito was chosen to be one of the one thousand beta testers for the closed beta of Sword Art Online, the first ever Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) for the NerveGear, and later joined the official version of the game. He thus became one of the 10,000 players who were trapped in Sword Art Online, where he remained a solo player for the majority of the game, willingly taking on the role of a Beater to reduce discrimination against other former beta testers, as well as actively taking part in Boss battles as one of the Clearers. Kirito temporarily became a member of the Moonlit Black Cats after helping them safely escape a dangerous dungeon, but returned to being a solo player when a fatal error resulted in the death of the other guild members. At some point in the game, Kirito became known as the «Black Swordsman» (黒の剣士, Kuro no Kenshi) due to his tendency to wear black clothing. Near the end of the game, Kirito joined the Knights of the Blood due to losing a wager with its leader, Heathcliff. Kirito eventually put an end to the game by defeating the final boss, thus clearing the game.

壷井遼太郎

In both Sword Art Online and the real world, Klein wore a red bandana that held up his hair and was tied around his forehead. In Sword Art Online, he had spiky reddish hair, but he has brownish hair in the real world. He also had a hooked nose, a slight beard on his cheeks and chin, and, according to Kirito, he looked like a wandering samurai or a bandit. During the two years in Aincrad he used red robes and black armor resembling those of a samurai including a katana, along with his guild members.

アンドリュー・ギルバート・ミルズ

Andrew is a massive and bulky African-American man with a brown goatee and brown eyes. He is bald and wears two silver earrings on his left ear in both Sword Art Online and the real world. At the beginning of the Sword Art Online official service, Agil wore a breastplate over a sleeveless shirt, light brown pants, and fur boots. By the end of the Sword Art Online Incident, he wore jungle green robes and gray armor while in combat. In the real world, Andrew wears a white shirt and a dark gray apron over pants of the same color. Kirigaya Kazuto also commented that he is as large in real life as he is in-game.

茅場晶彦

As his avatar Heathcliff, Akihiko eventually founded what later became Sword Art Online's strongest guild, the «Knights of the Blood». He was the owner of the first «Unique Skill», named «Holy Sword», and was considered to be strongest player in-game. He wielded the collective one-handed sword and tower shield called Liberator. He also was able to engage the boss of the 50 Floor in battle for ten minutes by himself, which earned him the title «Man of Legend» (伝説の男, Densetsu no Otoko). It was also rumored that Heathcliff's hit points (HP) had never reached the yellow zone.

サチ

In the real world, Sachi, along with all the other original members of the Moonlit Black Cats, were in a computer club at their school. She also happened to live fairly close to the leader of the guild, Keita.

桐ヶ谷翠

Midori adopted Kazuto in 2008, after her elder sister's death, and kept it a secret from the two children until Kazuto discovered the erased documents in the National registry in 2018. She herself also played virtual games like Kazuto, yet never reached the level of seriousness that Kazuto had.

ケイタ

Keita had short brown hair and brown eyes and was dressed in light, brown clothing with a metal chestguard, metal shoulder armour on both his shoulders, metal bracers on both of his arms. He also wore black, fingerless gloves that extended to his forearm and dark boots. Keita's trousers are of a paler shade of brown than his top. Keita's weapon of choice was a two-handed staff.

クラディール

Kuradeel was a man with pony-tailed, long, black hair. According to Kirito, Kuradeel was a man who looked to be in his early twenties, but due to the wrinkles on his face, he looked much older. He wore a standard white and red KoB uniform with a white and red metal chestplate, greaves and shoes, as well as white metal bracers, brownish-gray gloves and a white cape. After joining Laughing Coffin, he had an insignia of the guild tattooed on his right hand, hidden under his bracers.
