As he grew, his father trained him into wine tasting, but never let him actually drink wine, instead he made him taste various things like licking knives. Shizuku ended up hating wines and things related to them. But as his father died, he ended up drinking wine for the first time in his life and was fascinated. He got more interested into wine tastes and decided to protect his father's collection.

Issei has a very serious and delicate personality. As a wine critic, he is labeled a genius and has a unique taste in wine. He made Yutaka Kanzaki adopt him, a week before his death, so that he can inherit his wine collection.

Maki Saionji (さいおんじ マキ, Saionji Maki) is the president of Saionji Corporation/SAION Trading, which specializes in the import and sale of wine, granting her extensive connections in the fine wine business. She is the financial sponsor of Issei and his on-and-off casual lover, though she wishes to have Issei to herself, despite knowing his habit of having romantic flings with other women.

Shizuku Kanzaki and Miyabi Shinohara went looking for Robert as Shiro Fujieda told them he was their last hope trying to find a replacement wine for '99 Henri Jayer. They found him homeless living in a selfmade cardboard house, but he refused to come out until he heard for what they were looking him for. When he heard Shizuku was drinking wine only since yesterday, he decided to test them and dig out couple of wine bottles he had hid himself. He then gave Shizuku two glasses saying he must find the secret between them. After tasting them and thinking, Shizuku told Robert the wines were the same and were made from same vineyard. Robert then started laughing and explained he was correct. He then pulled another bottle from his stash and gave it to Shizuku. As they left, Robert commented that Yutaka's son had ripened.

At a shootout, Sara refused to continue shooting, until she drank her champagne as that was the moment when it was at it's best taste. She spoke with Issei Tomine on the phone, who was annoyed by Shizuku Kanzaki. They agreed to go to dinner when she returns and she also told him she had commercials to film for Taiyo Beer, which made Issei a bit annoyed as he knew Shizuku was working there.
