The story follows Link and Tetra, who live in a flood-covered Hyrule called the Great Sea. Traveling on Tetra's pirate ship, the pair discover a Ghost Ship. Immediately after Tetra boards the ship, she screams for help. While Link attempts to follow her, he slips and falls into the ocean. Washed ashore on an island, Link is awakened by Ciela, a fairy. Exploring the island, Link finds the Phantom Hourglass, filled with the Sands of Hours, and meets an old man named Oshus, who wants to help Link find the Ghost Ship and reunite with Tetra. To aid him in his quest, Link enlists the help of Captain Linebeck and his ship, the S. S. Linebeck, which Link, Ciela, and Linebeck use to visit islands. After scouring the Great Sea, Link learns that he must use maps and clues hidden in the Temple of the Ocean King to find the Spirits of Courage, Wisdom, and Power, which in turn will help him locate the Ghost Ship...

MAINLink's debut occurred in the 1986 action-adventure title The Legend of Zelda, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (originally in Japan on the Family Computer Disk System). Since that inaugural appearance, he has been a constant presence in virtually all mainline entries in the franchise, with the sole exceptions being the Japan-exclusive Satellaview titles, which are regarded as non-canonical.
When Link, the Hero of Winds, first meets Tetra, she is already being kidnapped by the Helmaroc King. The monster bird is distracted by Tetra's crew and she is dropped into the Fairy Woods. Link comes to her rescue, but because of this distraction, his younger sister Aryll, mistaken for Tetra, is kidnapped instead, much to Link's shock. The boy immediately tries to save her, only to fall from a cliff. Tetra catches him just in time, telling him to calm down and there is nothing he can do to save his sister at the moment.
Linebeck is the captain of the SS Linebeck steamboat, which Link uses to travel the World of the Ocean King for the full course of the game. Linebeck travels the world seeking treasure, which seems to be his driving force in everything he does, including accompanying Link.
Ciela first meets Link when he lands on Mercay Island, where she explains to him that she lost her memory. She then takes him to her grandpa, Oshus. Eventually, she and Link begin to travel together along with Linebeck, whom she does not like much and often fights with. Prior to the game's beginning, Ciela was attacked by Bellum, which caused her to lose her power and memories and wash up on Mercay Island's beach. After completing the Temple of Courage in Molida Island, another Fairy much like Ciela appears. Link goes to Oshus, who then uses his staff to fuse the new Fairy and Ciela together. This makes her memories come back, revealing that she is the Spirit of Time and Courage.
