Link's debut occurred in the 1986 action-adventure title The Legend of Zelda, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (originally in Japan on the Family Computer Disk System). Since that inaugural appearance, he has been a constant presence in virtually all mainline entries in the franchise, with the sole exceptions being the Japan-exclusive Satellaview titles, which are regarded as non-canonical.

Notably, as Ganon is revealed to be the endless reincarnation of Demise's hatred from Skyward Sword, and that villain himself is a humanoid, Ganondorf much more closely resembles him.

When Link, the Hero of Winds, first meets Tetra, she is already being kidnapped by the Helmaroc King. The monster bird is distracted by Tetra's crew and she is dropped into the Fairy Woods. Link comes to her rescue, but because of this distraction, his younger sister Aryll, mistaken for Tetra, is kidnapped instead, much to Link's shock. The boy immediately tries to save her, only to fall from a cliff. Tetra catches him just in time, telling him to calm down and there is nothing he can do to save his sister at the moment.

Even during her free time, Medli can be seen and heard trying to improve her skills as Valoo's attendant by practicing her most valued possession: the Rito Harp. She is also notable as one of the few characters in The Legend of Zelda series that can be controlled by the player other than Link.

Aryll is Link's younger sister who lives with him and their Grandma on Outset Island. Much like her older brother, the Hero of Winds, whom she slightly resembles, Aryll is a very kind, mature and thoughtful person who is eager to help others, especially her Grandma. She often calls Link, “Big Brother.” One of her favorite hobbies is to hang out at Outset Island's lookout and play with the Seagulls. Her Telescope is her most cherished possession, but she lends it to Link as a special gift for his birthday. Soon after, she and Link notice a giant bird known as Helmaroc King soaring in the skies while carrying Tetra in its talons. Tetra's Pirate Crew successfully hit the Helmaroc King with a cannon ball, causing Tetra to fall into the nearby Fairy Woods. Aryll urges her brother to go and rescue the pirate girl. After Link does so, the giant bird mistakes Aryll for Tetra, taking her away to the Forsaken Fortress. It then becomes Link's sworn priority to save her.
