Kurozu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in small ways: seashells, ferns, whirlpools in water, whirlwinds in air. And in large ways: the spiral marks on people's bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi's father, the voice from the cochlea in your inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurouzu-cho are pulled ever deeper, as if into a whirlpool from which there is no return...

MAINKirie is a rather tall (probably one of the tallest female characters in the manga) pale-skinned girl of average weight and build with straight upper-back length ginger hair where there is a side-fringe tucked behind her ear, large blue eyes (which were hazel in volume 1), thin eyebrows and she also seems to be wearing lipstick and heavy mascara. In Chapter 6: Medusa, her hair becomes cursed with spirals and tries to kill her on multiple occasions, leading Shuichi Saito to cut it short and her hair is now worn in a short, straight, layered crop which ends around her ears.

SUPPORTINGAzami is a "pretty" girl (as described by Kirie Goshima) with straight bob-cut black hair that has thick fringes where her thin eyebrows peek out from under, wide brown eyes, she appears to be wearing lipstick that is depicted with bright red lips (on the cover of the first volume) and she is shorter than Kirie.
