The year is 12,090 A.D., and what little is left of humanity has finally crawled out from the ashes of war and destruction. From the darkness of the fallout, mutants and a race of vampires known as the Nobility have spawned. They rule the weak with no remorse. Once bitten by a Nobility, one is cursed to become a member of the undead. Villagers cower in fear, hoping and praying for a savior to rid them of their undying nightmare. All they have to battle this danger is a different kind of danger – a Vampire Hunter.

SUPPORTINGD also known as Vampire Hunter D (吸血鬼ハンター"D") is a dhampir, a half vampire, half human who travels around the Frontier in search of the Nobility. In almost every book it is noted that D has superior strength, skills and knowledge in comparison to other dhampirs. It is hinted that this is because he has some special connection to the Sacred Ancestor (it is generally regarded that D is his son, though this has never been explicitly stated) and that he is the result of crossbreeding experiments performed by the Sacred Ancestor to halt the inevitable decline of the Nobility.

SUPPORTINGDoris Lang (ドリス・ラング) is a farmer living on the outskirts of Ransylva, a rural farming village on the Frontier. She is the daughter of a werewolf hunter and the older sister of Dan Lang, whom she looks after. After an encounter with Magnus Lee wherein she is bitten, she procures D's services as a vampire hunter to eliminate him. She makes her appearance in Vampire Hunter D.
