Ten years ago Fujiwara noticed he had a power to see multicolored auras surrounding people's bodies. Ever since then he's been having a weird dream about a war with cats. One day he meets a mysterious girl, that, after being picked on by crows and fallen from a tree, goes to search for her lost hat. Later that day, Fujiwara finds himself in a daydream, being attacked by the same cats he fights at night.

MAINMerry Nightmare is the female protagonist of Yumekui Merry. She is a dream demon who is the gatekeeper of the door that connects the Dream World from the Real World. Unlike the other dream demons, she doesn't need to possess a human to enter the real world, as she has her own body. Searching for a door to come back to the Dreamworld, she falls on Yumeji one day, who wants to help her to find her way back home. At first reluctant, when a daydream occurs and when she saves Yumeji's life, she accepts his help.

MAINJohn Doe, a dream demon called "The Chaser", leader of the cat army who appeared in Yumeji's dreams. He seems to have an interest in Yumeji, in order to get his body to enter the real world. He eventually got a cat as his vessel, Yumeji names the cat John.

MAINYumeji Fujiwara is the main protagonist of Yumekui Merry. He is a high school student, and ten years ago, he received the ability to perceive the aura of people's dreams which allows him to predict what kind of dreams they will have.

MAINIsana Tachibana is Yumeji's childhood friend. Daughter of the proprietor of the STO cafe in the city, she's a kind and quiet shy girl who works with her father. Yumeji saved her as she was about to fall from a playground when she was young. In the manga, she is one of the 67 humans that "Familiar" Legion tried to make into vessels. In the anime, she was forcibly made into the vessel of Pallette.
