Akagi: Yami ni Oritatta Tensai

赤木しげる

Akagi Shigeru is a supporting character in Nobuyuki Fukumoto's manga work Ten and the protagonist of its spin-off/prequel, Akagi: The Genius Who Descended Into the Darkness. A white-haired gambler, he is portrayed as an aloof genius who has reached a superhuman level of wit, intelligence, intuition, luck, force of will and all the other elements necessary to win at gambling, especially in the game of mahjong. Throughout the story, Akagi utilizes techniques other gamblers don't dare to in order to sway his opponents: brazen cheating, extremely risky maneuvers, far fetched bluffs, and blatant disregard for his own life.

鷲巣巌

Iwao Washizu (鷲巣巌, Washizu Iwao) is an older man who has made hundreds of billions of yen and become one of the most powerful people in the underground world. He acts as the main antagonist of the Washizu Arc.

安岡

Yasuoka (安岡) is a dirty detective. He was looking for a gang-related chicken run survivor, which led him to the mahjong parlor. He was one of the first people to realize Akagi's talents in mahjong, and takes advantage of his skills to great personal gain. He later presents Fake Akagi to the Kawada group as the real Akagi; making use of his name. In the manga, he also plays the role of the narrator.

仰木武司

平山幸雄

Yukio Hirayama (平山幸雄 Hirayama Yukio), also known as "Fake Akagi", was the representative mahjong player for the Kawada Yakuza group after being discovered and introduced to them by Yasuoka. Despite his physical resemblance to Akagi, his playing style is based solely on mathematical calculations and probability, in contrast to Akagi's natural gambling insight, inhuman luck, and psychological manipulation abilities. He lacks the courage required to be a true gambler, making him unable to beat Urabe by falling for his strong bluffs. He is eventually killed by Washizu after failing to beat him in Washizu mahjong.

市川

Ichikawa (市川) is a blind professional mahjong player with extremely acute hearing. Ichikawa is a player that would play by the book, while Akagi played in various ways, ignoring rationality. He seems to be similar to Akagi, but Akagi denies this, calling him a fake, and proves it by defeating him.

鈴木

Suzuki (鈴木) is one of Washizu's subordinates. He is the player to the right of Washizu and supports him in the match with Akagi.

矢木圭次

南郷

Nangou (南郷) is a gambler who was carrying a large burden and debt of 3 million yen. He gambles with the yakuza to repay his debts. His livelihood on the line, he lets Akagi proxy for him when he discovers that there is more to Akagi than meets the eye.

Ishikawa (石川) is a member of the Kawada Group. He was present at the Ichikawa vs. Akagi match, when he was third in the Kawada Group. Six years later, on his way back after meeting Fake Akagi, he spots the real Akagi in a street fight. He later brings Akagi to the match with Urabe.
