Daiichi is a hard-working and responsible boy despite his gruff "no-nonsense" exterior . He is the family-oriented "big brother" of the group, having been forced to grow up quickly after his mother died and his father abandoned the family three years before the story begins . He works as a mail and newspaper delivery boy and helps his uncle's landscaping business to support his three younger siblings, choosing to live separately from his uncle so his father would have a place to return to .

Maki is the most well-adjusted and emotionally healthy of the pilots—a rare bright spot in the darkness of Bokurano. She is a cheerful, open, and playful tomboy who carries herself with boyish confidence . Unlike most of the other children who are crushed by trauma and despair, Maki faces her death with remarkable peace and even joy, making her death one of the most beautiful in the series .

Mako is a girl who focuses all her energy on living honestly and being an active benefit to the community, hoping others will see her as responsible and dependable . Despite this, the well-known fact that her mother is a prostitute and her humorless, over-responsible attitude leave her without friends . Since elementary school, any kind of hatred or dishonesty tortures her—so much that she cannot even raise a clenched fist at the kids who bully her, constantly having to keep to her duty without protesting .
