Arale Norimaki (則巻アラレ Norimaki Arare) is the main protagonist of the Dr. Slump series. She is an android built by Senbei Norimaki. She is known for her innocent, energetic personality, lack of common sense, and unbelievably superhuman strength. Ironically, she is highly nearsighted and needs to wear glasses. Senbei's goal in creating her was to build the perfect humanoid robot and challenged her to keep her true nature a secret. Despite her incredible strength and constant removal of her own head, the rest of Penguin Village seems to accept as just a very strange, very strong girl.

則巻千兵衛

Senbei Norimaki (則巻千兵衛; also spelled as 則巻センベエ Norimaki Senbē), also known as Dr. Slump, is the deuteragonist of the Dr. Slump series. He is Penguin Village's goofy and lecherous genius inventor and creator of Arale. Even though the series is named after him, he has often been pushed aside in favor of the stories revolving more around his android creation Arale instead.

則巻ガジラ

木緑あかね

Akane Kimidori (木緑あかね Kimidori Akane "Yellow-Green Dark Red") is one of the main supporting characters of the Dr. Slump series. She is Arale Norimaki's trouble-making "bad-girl" friend as well as her best friend and later Tsukutsun Tsun's girlfriend. She lives at the Coffee Pot, a café that her sister Aoi runs it. In the Harmony Gold Dub, her name is Sandy.

山吹みどり

Midori Yamabuki (山吹みどり Yamabuki Midori) (later Norimaki) is one of the main supporting characters of the Dr. Slump series. She was originally Arale Norimaki's beautiful teacher at Penguin Village Middle School as well as Senbei Norimaki's dream girl. Later on in the series, she becomes Senbei's wife and Arale's surrogate mother.

摘突詰

Tsukutsun Tsun (摘突詰 Tsun Tsukutsun) is a main supporting character in the second half of Dr. Slump who later makes a minor appearance in Dragon Ball. He's a teenage boy who practices kung fu and is the son of Tsuruten and Tsuntsunodanoteiyugo, younger brother of Tsururin as well as the future husband of Akane Kimidori.

空豆タロウ

Taro Soramame (空豆タロウ Soramame Tarō) is one of the main supporting characters of the Dr. Slump series. He is Peasuke Soramame's older brother and a close friend of Arale Norimaki and Akane Kimidori. He is a "bad boy" who always tries to act cool. In the Harmony Gold English Dub, his name is Butch.

オボッチャマン

Obotchaman (オボッチャマン) is an android built by Dr. Mashirito using the plans for Arale Norimaki, but male. Despite being introduced later in the series, he becomes quickly one of the major characters in Dr. Slump and a love interest to the heroine.

空豆ピースケ

Peasuke Soramame (空豆ピースケ Soramame Piisuke) is one of the main supporting characters of the Dr. Slump series. He's Taro Soramame's little brother, and a classmate and close friend of Arale Norimaki and Akane Kimidori as well. In Harmony Gold Dub, his name is Buddy.

則巻ターボ

Turbo Norimaki (則巻ターボ Norimaki Tābo) is a supporting character in the second half of Dr. Slump. He's Senbei and Midori's first biological child and a true genius, far surpassing his father. An older version of him is seen in the follow-up manga Dr. Slump Returns, But Only For a Little While, and in later movies.
