ハルハラ・ハル子

Haruko Haruhara (ハルハラ・ハル子, Haruhara Haruko) is a central character of the FLCL series, Mabase's newest resident, and an extraterrestrial investigator for the Galactic Space Police Brotherhood. She becomes the Nandaba household's maid while working to find Atomsk, the most powerful space pirate in the galaxy. She leaves Earth in FLCLimax, but returns as a teacher in Mabase in FLCL Progressive. In FLCL Alternative, she's back on Earth again, tackling a whole host of new Medical Mechanica problems.

サメジマ・マミ美

Mamimi Samejima (サメジマ・マミ美, Samejima Mamimi) is a high school truant and Tasuku's ex-girlfriend. She is a lonely and depressed chain-smoker, and a pyromaniac. She adopts several pets and names them all "Ta-kun" (タッくん, Takkun) as a replacement for Naota's brother, including Naota himself, but later grows uninterested when Naota exhibits independence. Her name is written in Katakana in the manga panel scene, which suggests she may not be entirely Japanese.

ナンダバ・ナオ太

Naota Nandaba (ナンダバ・ナオ太, Nandaba Naota), or Ta-kun (タッくん, Takkun) as he is called by Mamimi and Haruko, is the protagonist of the first season of FLCL, obsessed with appearing mature and nonchalant. He idolizes his older brother, Tasuku, who represents for Naota what it means to be an "adult." He also has a crush on both Mamimi and Haruko during the course of the season.

たっくん

Takkun (タッくん, Takkun) is a stray kitten that Mamimi adopts in episode 2 but he eventually abandons her to be with a white cat.

カンチ

Canti (カンチ, Kanchi) is the first robot to emerge from Naota Nandaba's head in FLCL. It was manufactured by Medical Mechanica, and had been used by them to capture Atomsk. It is later revealed that Atomsk can manifest through Canti, with Naota serving as the catalyst.

ニナモリ・エリ

Eri Ninamori (ニナモリ・エリ, Ninamori Eri) is the daughter of the mayor of Mabase and the president of Naota's sixth grade class. Like Naota she is obsessed with acting grown-up, but she often loses her composure when angry or excited. Ninamori hides her frustration with her father's sex scandal, and rigs an election for the school play so that she gets the lead role while Naota gets cast opposite her, hinting that she has a crush on him.

アマラオ

Commander Amarao (アマラオ・指揮官, Amarao Kanrikan) is a special agent of the Bureau of Interstellar Immigration who, apparently, has some past history with Haruko and claims to "know who or what" she really is. Amarao's childhood seems to mirror Naota's.

ナンダバ・カモン

Kamon Nandaba (ナンダバ・カモン, Nandaba Kamon) is Tasuku and Naota's father, a former pop culture journalist working as a freelance writer, with his own trashy tabloid: "Kamon-Mabase" (the title is a pun of "come-on mabase"). He makes the most references to pop culture: EVA, "Monkey-sensei" (referring to the creator of the series Lupin III), Hamtaro, Mobile Suit Gundam, and MTV to name a few.

マサムネ・マサシ

Masashi is friends with Naota and is often seen hanging out with him, Gaku and Ninamori. Masashi also has a job as a delivery boy, and drives a truck around, even though he is only in grade school. His father's truck is later eaten by the terminal core when Mamimi loses control of it. Masashi, like Naota, generally sounds slightly depressed.

ミヤジ・ジュン子

Junko Miyaji (宮地・淳子, Miyaji Junko) is Naota's eccentric sixth grade teacher. Her students have given her the nickname "Miya-Jun" (宮-淳).
