Edward Elric

Edward Elric (エドワード・エルリック, Edowādo Erurikku), commonly shortened to just Ed (エド,, Edo), is the titular main protagonist of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. He is the older brother of Alphonse Elric. Once he became a State Alchemist, he was given the official title of Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師,, Hagane no Renkinjutsushi), which became a second nickname for him that is often shortened to just Fullmetal.

Alphonse Elric

アルフォンス・エルリック

Alphonse Elric (アルフォンス・エルリック, Arufonsu Erurikku), commonly shortened to just Al (アル, Aru), is the deuteragonist of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. He is the younger brother of Edward Elric. Al is also a victim of a failed Human Transmutation experiment to bring back his late mother, which ultimately resulted in his brother losing his left leg and right arm and Alphonse his entire body. Before it left completely, Edward managed to alchemically bind Alphonse's soul to a large suit of armour via a blood seal.

Roy Mustang

Roy Mustang (ロイ・マスタング, Roi Masutangu), also known as the Flame Alchemist (焔の錬金術師, Honō no Renkinjutsushi), is the tritagonist of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. He is a State Alchemist and officer in the Amestrian State Military. A hero of the Ishval Civil War and Edward Elric’s superior officer, Colonel Mustang is a remarkably capable commander who plans to become the next Führer of Amestris.

Riza Hawkeye

リザ・ホークアイ

First Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye (リザ・ホークアイ, Riza Hōkuai), also spelt Liza Hawkeye in the trading card game, is first lieutenant in the Amestrian State Military as well as the personal adjutant and bodyguard of Colonel Roy Mustang. A sharpshooter and firearms specialist, Lt. Hawkeye is an invaluable asset to the Colonel both in office and on the battlefield and serves as his closest and most supportive subordinate.

Van Hohenheim

ヴァン・ホーエンハイム

Van Hohenheim (ヴァン・ホーエンハイム, Van Hōenhaimu)—known in the 2003 anime series as Hohenheim of Light (光のホーエンハイム, Hikari no Hōenhaimu) and sometimes given the full name Hohenheim Elric or Van Hohenheim Elric—was a deceptively ancient and extremely powerful Alchemist as well as the estranged father of Edward and Alphonse Elric. Despite disappearing suddenly during their infancy, Hohenheim returned during the course of the series in order to right the wrongs of his mysterious past.

Den

デン

Den (デン) is the Rockbell family pet. Her gender is never directly stated in the original manga, but she is later confirmed to be female in multiple guidebooks. However, both the VIZ English translation of the manga and the Funimation versions of both anime, refer to Den as a boy in all instances, perhaps not realizing that Den is female. The Chuang Yi English manga correctly refers to her as being female. She lost her front left leg sometime before the start of the series in a traffic accident while protecting Edward and his friends (who are unspecified). As a result, she wears an automail limb in its place.

Russell Tringham

Russell Tringham (ラッセル・トリンガム, Rasseru Toringamu), also spelt Russell Tringum on his reference sheet for the 2003 anime, and his younger brother Fletcher are the sons of the famed alchemist Nash Tringham. Their characters are adapted to the 2003 anime from the light novel Fullmetal Alchemist: The Land of Sand, rather than the manga. Russell seeks to complete their father's research with a substance known as red water, a toxic liquid with alchemical properties. In order to do so, they impersonate the Elric brothers to gain access to resources and locations reserved for State Alchemists. While Fletcher is reluctant to do this, Russell pressures him into participating. They are almost executed towards the end of the anime for doing this, and after being saved they try to help Ed find out about the homunculi. The brothers are seen in the credits, still studying their alchemy. Although Edward and Russell bicker frequently, Fletcher and Alphonse get along. The two Tringham brothers specialize in alchemy involving plants.

Mugear

Mugear (マグワール, Maguwāru), also spelled Mugwar in the 2003 anime subtitles, is a character exclusive to the 2003 anime. He is a greedy landowner and scientist living in the city of Xenotime.
