Mao

摩緒

Mao (摩緒) is the main character of the eponymous story MAO. He is the onmyōji cursed by Byōki from Heian era and lives as a doctor for ayakashis in the Taisho era.

Eight years ago, September 1st 2011 at noon, during her first year in elementary school, she and her parents were caught in a sinking accident when they passed by a shutter street named Five Line Shopping Street (五行商店街) by car. Mysteriously she was pulled into the Taisho Era and was faced to face with Byouki after Mao saved her, she then was dragged back into the Reiwa Era, Her parents died and she was found covered in blood and not breathing, yet for some reason she still lives.

Her name was given by her father, the head of the Goko Clan, and she lived in a cavern filled with wards surrounding her nearby the manor, to serve as a vessel to absorb all the discarded curses into her body. Her father would occasionally visit her to carve marks onto her flesh that would little by little cover all her body over the years. As she knew no other life nor anything about the outside world beyond the cavern she lived in, she did not feel any desire or discomfort. However, one day she woke up to find the gate that kept her captive open for unknown reasons, and all the ayakashis she had absorbed were urging her to go out, leading her to experience the outside world for the first time. She enjoyed seeing the moon and the stars as the ayakashis carried her through the sky, when a tornado of sutras flew out from the manor, wounding the ayakashis and sending her falling to the ground near a river. She crawled to that river and saw her reflection for the first time, revealing half of her face being badly mutilated from the ayakashis she had absorbed, but she didn’t know it was ugly. And right after, she is approached by a young Mao who had been ordered to investigate the ayakashis that were seen flying in the sky and felt moved by him as he asked her if she was alright, but the high priest Sengoku showed up and after ordering Mao to forget what he saw, packed her away in a box and took her back to her cavern where she’d continues her role to absorb curses as the master scolds her for the escaped ayakashis. However, she wanted to see Mao again, as she was unable to forget his kindness, learned to use the curses she absorbed to examine the outside world. She saw Mao enter the Goko Clan’s manor and noticed he had fallen in love with Sana from a distance, much to her grief as she too fell in love with him and could not have him know.

Haimaru (灰丸), also known as Byōki (猫鬼), is the main antagonist of the story MAO. He is a cat demon who was originally Sana's pet cat.

Shortly before 5 headless corpse incidents, her master’s health began to decline, and he allowed no one but his wife to come near him and treat him with his face constantly kept bandaged. And one night, she saw her master, who had been going out on his own after sundown and would return after everyone in the manor had gone to sleep, carrying a bag that was leaking blood and had hair coming out of the top, which led her to believe he might be the one responsible for the murders.

He had been hospitalized for a long time, and on the day of the cave-in accident in which Nanoka and her parents were caught up in, the family was on their way to the hospital after Nanoka was picked up from school, as he apparently had reached a critical condition. He mysteriously remained alive however and took care of his granddaughter ever since.
