After Sword Art Online was cleared, Asuna transferred her SAO avatar to ALfheim Online and began playing the game as an Undine. Due to her tendency to charge into battle with a rapier despite being a healer, she has earned the nickname «Berserk Healer» (バーサクヒーラー, Bāsaku Hīrā). Asuna has also created an alternative avatar, the Sylph «Erika» (エリカ, Erika), as she sometimes wanted to change her appearance.

Kirito was chosen to be one of the one thousand beta testers for the closed beta of Sword Art Online, the first ever Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) for the NerveGear, and later joined the official version of the game. He thus became one of the 10,000 players who were trapped in Sword Art Online, where he remained a solo player for the majority of the game, willingly taking on the role of a Beater to reduce discrimination against other former beta testers, as well as actively taking part in Boss battles as one of the Clearers. Kirito temporarily became a member of the Moonlit Black Cats after helping them safely escape a dangerous dungeon, but returned to being a solo player when a fatal error resulted in the death of the other guild members. At some point in the game, Kirito became known as the «Black Swordsman» (黒の剣士, Kuro no Kenshi) due to his tendency to wear black clothing. Near the end of the game, Kirito joined the Knights of the Blood due to losing a wager with its leader, Heathcliff. Kirito eventually put an end to the game by defeating the final boss, thus clearing the game.

Suguha has short black hair and dark grey eyes, almost blackish. Her breasts are very large, even compared to other members of the female cast, although she has grown a lot recently. She also has a cute childish look.

In both Sword Art Online and the real world, Klein wore a red bandana that held up his hair and was tied around his forehead. In Sword Art Online, he had spiky reddish hair, but he has brownish hair in the real world. He also had a hooked nose, a slight beard on his cheeks and chin, and, according to Kirito, he looked like a wandering samurai or a bandit. During the two years in Aincrad he used red robes and black armor resembling those of a samurai including a katana, along with his guild members.

篠崎里香

Rika has brown hair in the real world and she used to have brown hair in the early days of Sword Art Online,, until she later customized it to pink with a white hairpin (red in a light novel volume 2 colored illustration). In Sword Art Online, Lisbeth's eyes are dark blue (dark pink in the anime). Her blacksmith uniform looks more like the uniform of a waitress: a dark red top with puffed sleeves and a flared skirt of the same color, combined with a pure white apron on top of it, as well as a red ribbon atop her chest. In both the game world and the real world, she has small freckles on her cheeks.

In both the real world and Sword Art Online, Keiko's hair is light brown and tied into two tails by red ribbons, as well as two red ring baubles for her SAO avatar. Like her hair, Keiko's eyes in the real world are light brown; however, her SAO avatar had red eyes. Before meeting Kirito, she wore a yellow robe with a dagger and pouch strapped to her waist at the back, a silver breastplate and pauldrons, brown leather gloves with metal bands, black shorts, and yellow boots. Afterwards, she wore a red robe of a similar design that exposed part of her shoulders and sides, a short black skirt, fingerless red gloves, and black, asymmetrical shoes with long black socks.

アンドリュー・ギルバート・ミルズ

Andrew is a massive and bulky African-American man with a brown goatee and brown eyes. He is bald and wears two silver earrings on his left ear in both Sword Art Online and the real world. At the beginning of the Sword Art Online official service, Agil wore a breastplate over a sleeveless shirt, light brown pants, and fur boots. By the end of the Sword Art Online Incident, he wore jungle green robes and gray armor while in combat. In the real world, Andrew wears a white shirt and a dark gray apron over pants of the same color. Kirigaya Kazuto also commented that he is as large in real life as he is in-game.
