The Case Study of Vanitas

ヴァ二タス

Vanitas (ヴァニタス, Vanitasu) is a protagonist and the titular character of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. Contrary to the legend of Vanitas of the Blue Moon, Vanitas claims to be "an average human being" who happened to inherit the Book of Vanitas. It is his stated intention to save the Vampire race by any means possible, using the Book of Vanitas not to spread Malnomen but to cure it. As such, he refers to himself as a doctor who specializes in Vampires. He commissions the help of Noé Archiviste, a Vampire sent by his teacher to research the Book of Vanitas and the series' narrator, in finding cases of Malnomen and curing them.

ノエ・アルシヴィスト

Noé Archiviste (ノエ・アルシヴィスト, Noe Arushivisuto) is a central protagonist of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. A Vampire raised in the rural French village of Averoigne, Noé is sent to see Paris for the first time to complete an assignment given to him by his Teacher. Instructed to locate the Book of Vanitas and discern its "true character," he encounters Vanitas, the human owner of the Book and a self-styled "Vampire medical specialist." Despite his distaste for Vanitas, he agrees to serve as his companion, seeing Vanitas's mission to cure Malnomen as noble, and hoping to complete his research on the Book.

ルイ・ド・サド

Louis de Sade (ルイ・ド・サド, Rui do Sado) was a character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. A Vampire of the Crimson Moon, he was the brother of Dominique de Sade and childhood friend of Noé Archiviste.

ジャン＝ ジャック

Jean-Jacques Chastel (ジャン＝ジャック・シャステル, Jan Jakku Shasuteru) is a character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He is the protector and longtime companion of Chloé d'Apchier, the last surviving member of the d'Apchiers, living alongside her in the district of Gévaudan rather than in Altus with those of his race. He swears to stay by Chloé's side no matter what, even as she willingly contracts a Malnomen to fulfill her wish.

ミハイル

Mikhail (ミハイル, Mihairu), also referred to by the pet name "Misha" (ミーシャ, Miisha), is a character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He is first referred to as No. 71 (ナンバーナナイチ, Nanbaa Nanaichi) by Doctor Moreau, revealed as one of his human test subjects in an attempt to create artificial Vampires. He was eventually revealed as Vanitas's younger brother, though the two have no blood relation. Both were saved from Moreau by the Vampire of the Blue Moon, whom Mikhail referred to as "Father."

ルキウス・オリフラム

カトリーヌ

Catherine (カトリーヌ, Katorīnu) is a minor character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. Catherine belongs to an unknown aristocratic family within the Vampire world, and as such she received an invitation to Marquis Machina's Bal Masqué alongside her mother and younger sister.

パークス・オルロック

Count Parks Orlok (パークス・オルロック伯爵 (はくしゃく) , Pākusu Orurokku Hakushaku), also known as the Lord of the Other World (異 (い) 界 (かい) 領 (りょう) 主 (しゅ) , Ikai Ryoushu) is a supporting character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He is a Vampire personally appointed by the Queen to stand stationed in the human world's Paris and monitor Vampire activities there to preserve the delicate balance between races. As a result, he is the one whom Noé and Vanitas have to converge with upon entering Paris, the Book of Vanitas's existence threatening to upset the fragile harmony he works to maintain.

フレッド

Fred (フレッド, Fureddo) was a minor character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He along with Gilles, Fanny, and Mina made up the group of childhood friends for Noé Archiviste and Louis and Dominique de Sade. They had all grown up in Averoigne together, the former four being children of a nearby small village and the latter three being from the castle of "The Shapeless One," Noé's teacher and the de Sades' grandfather. From young childhood to adolescence, the children would often play together in the forests around the castle and the secret base they had discovered together.

Gilles (ジル, Jiru) was a minor character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He along with Fred, Fanny, and Mina made up the group of childhood friends for Noé Archiviste and Louis and Dominique de Sade. They had all grown up in Averoigne together, the former four being children of a nearby small village and the latter three being from the castle of "The Shapeless One," Noé's teacher and the de Sades' grandfather. From young childhood to adolescence, the children would often play together in the forests around the castle and the secret base they had discovered together. Gilles was the elder brother of Fanny.
