The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Link's debut occurred in the 1986 action-adventure title The Legend of Zelda, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (originally in Japan on the Family Computer Disk System). Since that inaugural appearance, he has been a constant presence in virtually all mainline entries in the franchise, with the sole exceptions being the Japan-exclusive Satellaview titles, which are regarded as non-canonical.

ゼルダ

The mortal incarnation of the Goddess Hylia, Zelda was chosen by destiny to be the keeper of the Triforce of Wisdom, which is the main reason she plays such an integral role in the legends of Hyrule, much like Link does with the Triforce of Courage or Ganon with the Triforce of Power. Just like the former, Princess Zelda is not a single individual within the franchise, but rather various individuals incarnated with the same name that have appeared across the history of Hyrule. Unlike Link, however, all of the iterations of the character belong to the same familial bloodline. Like Ganon, she also has had a couple of alter-egos such as Sheik and Tetra. Whilst each Zelda is distinct, the "fundamental soul" of the character Hylia has endured throughout each generation.

スタルキッド

A Skull Kid can be found in the Lost Woods in the area directly to the left of the entrance room in Ocarina of Time. Whenever Link approaches, the Skull Kid will disappear from the area. To circumvent this, Link can befriend the Skull Kid by playing "Saria's Song" while standing on top of the stump across from the Skull Kid's position. He will then receive a Piece of Heart as a gift. While Z Targeting, Navi mentions that the Skull Kid seems unhappy to have no face. Some of the Kokiri remember hearing him complaining about his face, as well. Upon first seeing Link wearing the Skull Mask, the Skull Kid comments that he would like it to make him appear a little tougher. Link is then able to sell him the Mask as part of the Mask Trading Sequence, but the Skull Kid pays just 10 Rupees when the wholesale price is 20, leaving Link to cover the difference. Another two Skull Kids can be found in the area directly to the right of the entrance, where Link can play a Musical Session with them on his Ocarina to win another Piece of Heart.

Sheik reveals himself to Link in the Temple of Time shortly after he is freed from the Chamber of Sages after his seven-year slumber to become the legendary Hero of Time. He introduces himself as the "Survivor of the Sheikahs". He informs Link that he must awaken the Seven Sages in order to bring peace back to Hyrule. Alerting him of the need to acquire the Hookshot in order to enter the Temples, specifically the Forest Temple, Sheik stays in front of the Pedestal of the Master Sword until that dungeon is completed. He later appears when Link arrives at the Sacred Forest Meadow. He tells the hero about the songs for Warping that can access Temple entrances and teaches him the Minuet of Forest before disappearing again with the flash of a Deku Nut. Further along, Sheik approaches Link at the Fire Temple entrance in the Death Mountain Crater, teaching him the Bolero of Fire before walking away, using a wall of flame to halt Link's inquiring advance.

ガノンドロフ

Notably, as Ganon is revealed to be the endless reincarnation of Demise's hatred from Skyward Sword, and that villain himself is a humanoid, Ganondorf much more closely resembles him.

マロン

In Ocarina of Time, Malon is a young cheerful girl who loves to sing outside Hyrule Castle's walls at night. She, along with Ingo, takes care of most of the duties at Lon Lon Ranch due to her father's laziness. Link first meets Malon, who calls him "Fairy Boy", due to the young hero's Kokiri-like clothing and having Navi by his side, in the Market where she is looking for her father, Talon. Link finds Talon asleep outside Hyrule Castle and wakes him up using the Cucco that hatched from the Weird Egg Malon gave him. After this, Talon returns to the Ranch and reunites with Malon. When Link visits Malon at the Ranch, she introduces him to a certain young Horse named Epona, and teaches the young hero "Epona's Song", a song her mother composed.

Since Link is not a Kokiri but actually a Hylian and does not have a Fairy to call his own, Navi is summoned by the Great Deku Tree to accompany him on his quest to save Hyrule as a partner. Throughout the Nintendo 64 game, Navi provides Link with a variety of clues to help him solve puzzles and progress in his quest. Navi also helps the Hero of Time learn the main controls in the game, teaching him how to open doors and how to push and pull blocks. The player can listen to Navi's advice by pressing the C-Up Button in the controller whenever her name flashes on the screen, which she yells out "Hey!". When the button is pressed, she will say "Listen!". She does this to guide Link on his next objective (similarly to Kaepora Geabora and Sheik) or explain an enemy's abilities or weaknesses.

サリア

Saria is Link's childhood friend from his earliest years in the Kokiri Forest. She is well-liked amongst other Kokiri, particularly by their boss, Mido, whose dislike of Link might be partially explained by the latter's close friendship with Saria. She often travels to the Sacred Forest Meadow to play her Ocarina. She plays a song that inspires people to dance called "Saria's Song." When Link becomes the Hero of Time, he rescues Saria from the Forest Temple and allows her to awaken as the Forest Sage.

In Ocarina of Time, Volvagia was an ancient wingless fire-breathing Dragon that lived in the depths of Death Mountain and was essentially the spirit of the Mountain. It was said that a legendary Goron hero destroyed it with the use of the Megaton Hammer at some point in the past. By the events of Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf revived the wicked Dragon to secure the Fire Temple from intrusion. As this beast has a diet of Gorons, the Evil King also fed the rock people to Volvagia to make an example to the other races that might revolt against him. Incited by Darunia's son, Link, the Hero of Time, sets out to destroy Volvagia to stop the Dragon from escaping the temple and turning Hyrule into a burning wasteland, and therefore repeat the feat the Goron Hero had done.
