MAINLink's debut occurred in the 1986 action-adventure title The Legend of Zelda, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (originally in Japan on the Family Computer Disk System). Since that inaugural appearance, he has been a constant presence in virtually all mainline entries in the franchise, with the sole exceptions being the Japan-exclusive Satellaview titles, which are regarded as non-canonical.

MAINPrincess Midna is one of the Twili, a race descended from wielders of powerful and evil magic who were banished to an alternate dimension by the Golden Goddesses Din, Farore, and Nayru after an event known as the Interloper War. This alternate dimension, out of which the sublimated descendants could only exist as shadows, eventually became known as the Twilight Realm.

SUPPORTINGZant is unusual to the Twili race and is the self-proclaimed ruler of the Twilight which engulfs much of Hyrule during Twilight Princess. He is portrayed as the primary antagonist for the majority of the game and possesses powers beyond Link's comprehension. There are multiple ways of defeating Zant, the first suspected way being the use of the Fused Shadows. When Zant steals these away from Midna and returns her to the Light World, the only option left to reach and defeat Zant is to find the Mirror of Twilight which will grant access into the Twilight Realm.
