Ichigo is out on a hot date with her 'crush' when suddenly she's involved in an odd incident in which her DNA is merged with the DNA of an almost extinct wildcat. When four other girls' DNA is merged with the DNA of four other almost extinct animals, it's apparent that they're part of a much bigger plan. Ichigo and her friends have been chosen to become a part of a secret project called the "Mew Project." Their mission: To protect the planet from aliens who are using the planet's animals to attack humans.

MAINIchigo Momomiya (jpn. 桃宮 いちご Momomiya Ichigo) is a character from the manga and anime series Tokyo Mew Mew, and the main protagonist and heroine of the story. She is the first of the Mew Mews to be introduced and her D.N.A is merged with an Iriomote cat.
藤原ざくろ
MAINZakuro Fujiwara went to a prestigious school and was fully educated. Much of her past isn't mentioned in the manga but is shown more in the anime. It was mentioned in one episode, that she used to live in America, as she left 'home' two years before the series started.
藍沢みんと
MAINWhen Minto was a child, she would show her dancing to her older brother. However, he was taken to a prestigious school. They never spoke to one another much afterwards. Minto used to see her parents often inside her home before they became focused on work. Minto was learning ballet as a little girl and became an exceptional dancer, having many recitals and shows. She soon became a Prima Ballerina.
黄歩鈴
MAINBu-Ling likes doing acrobatics and is very playful. The other Mew Mews agree that her monkey DNA is a perfect match for her personality, as she is full of energy and loves having fun – to the point where Minto considers her very immature. She is also the most hyperactive member of the team, even more-so than Ichigo. But she can be serious at times. This later point can be demonstrated when she tends to her household responsibilities, such as cleaning, making meals and spending time with her younger siblings.

MAINIn the anime, Retasu has a younger brother named Uri. Her parents, Yomogi and Eizaburou Midorikawa, always encouraged her to "Be herself, and someday, she will have real friends.".

SUPPORTINGRyou is a genius from a wealthy family. In episode 36, his father mentions that his IQ was over 180 at age of 10. He is headstrong, stubborn, rude, sarcastic, and occasionally reclusive.
蒼の騎士
SUPPORTINGAfter his first appearance, the Blue Knight reappeared whenever Ichigo was in danger—fighting with an unnamed sword and disappearing soon after. As the series progresses, Ichigo attempts to learn his true identity, suspecting both Ryou and Keiichiro at one point, before learning near the end of the series that he is an alternate persona of her boyfriend, Masaya Aoyama .

SUPPORTINGRingo's father lives in Tokyo but information on him is practically non-existent. Ringo spends most of her time staying with her brother, Mashio Akai, at the nature reserve. Their mother died when they were young. She used to be sickly when she was younger, so she couldn't go out much. She is alone most of the time and has no friends except for her pet penguin, Yuki, up to the point of meeting the other Mew Mews. As a result, she was very shy in the beginning but slowly warms up to her new friends.
