Ushio and Tora

虎

Tora (とら, Tiger) was one of the main protagonists of Ushio and Tora. He was a youkai who was released when Ushio Aotsuki pulled out the Beast Spear that kept him pinned to the basement wall of Ushio's temple. Prior to being sealed under the temple, he was once a human named Shagakusha. After the birth of Hakumen no Mono and found the beast spear, he became a youkai known as Nagatobimaru, famously feared among the youkai community for his sheer size, strength, and powers of flame and lightning.

蒼月潮

Ushio Aotsuki (蒼月潮, Aotsuki Ushio) is the protagonist of the Ushio and Tora series. He is the fourteen-year-old son of Shigure Aotsuki and Sumako Aotsuki, and resides with his father in Fugen'in, a temple which belongs to the Aotsuki lineage. As he was told that his mother is deceased and his father is often away, Ushio usually lives alone until he frees Tora, the youkai who was trapped in his temple's hidden basement for 500 years.

白面の者

Hakumen no Mono is an extremely powerful, white nine-tailed fox born from ancient times who enjoys destroying countries by manipulating the rulers and creating fear among humans and Yōkai.

秋葉流

Nagare Akiba (秋葉流, Akiba Nagare) is a gifted monk that is often regarded as a genius. Because of Nagare's talent he was named as one of the Candidates for the Beast Spear, but after meeting Ushio and Tora, decided to stop pursuing the beast spear.

羽生礼子

Reiko Hanyuu (羽生 礼子 Hanyū Reiko) is an orphaned girl who goes to the same school as Ushio Aotsuki, Asako Nakamura and Mayuko Inoue. Her father was very overprotective of her, and when he died he became an oni, causing danger to any boys who took the slightest fancy of her that she became distressed greatly and she tried to commit suicide many times in vain. Ushio finally made her father realize his errors, and he left for the afterworld. Thereafter, Reiko was able to lead a normal life and became good friends with Ushio, Asako and Mayuko.

蒼月須磨子

Sumako Aotsuki (蒼月 須磨子 Aotsuki Sumako), before marriage Sumako Hizaki (日崎 須磨子 (ひざき すまこ), is the third third generation keeper of Hakumen no Mono who imprisons the 9-Tailed Fox with her barrier, the wife of Shigure Aotsuki and the mother of Ushio Aotsuki.

Jie Mei (ジエメイ, Jie Mei) was born in ancient China over 2000 years ago as the daughter of a blade-maker, and had a brother named Giryou. Their parents were murdered by Hakumen no Mono, and Jiemei overheard her brother speaking of a forbidden method to create holy blades: Human Sacrifice. Jiemei killed herself by throwing herself into the forge so that her brother could do this, and it drove him mad as he forged a blade and hammered it until his body became the shaft.
