Berserk

ガッツ

Guts is the protagonist of Berserk. He is a tall, muscular man that swings a huge sword called the Dragon Slayer, he has a prosthetic left forearm that has a magnetic grip that also conceals a cannon. Renowned as the "Black Swordsman", he is a former mercenary and branded wanderer who travels the world in a constant internal struggle between pursuing his own ends and protecting those dear to him.

グリフィス

Griffith was the founder and leader of the mercenary unit known as the Band of the Hawk, named for his helmet which was forged in the shape of a Hawk's head. Extraordinarily charismatic, intelligent, and handsome, his skill with his sabre and tactics gives him and his band the reputation of invincibility, making him the favored choice of the Midland King, who was locked in a century long war with the Empire of Chuder. Believing that he is destined for greater things than the average man, Griffith is willing to sacrifice everything for the dream of his own kingdom and only values others so far as they are useful to him. The one exception seems to be [Guts](https://anilist.co/character/422/Guts) and [Casca](https://anilist.co/character/423/Casca), both of whom he confides to in private moments. The source of his ambition is a Behelit given to him by a fortune teller she claimed was "The Egg of the King," which could lead an average person to becoming King himself. ~! Griffith eventually used the Behelit during the Eclipse, and sacrificed nearly the entire Band of the Hawk to become Femto, the fifth member of the God Hand !~

キャスカ

Casca was the only female soldier in the original Band of the Hawk and is behind only to [Guts](https://anilist.co/character/422/Guts) and [Griffith](https://anilist.co/character/424/Griffith) in swordsmanship. Her ambivalent relationship to both of them makes her moody and capricious. Casca joins the Band of the Hawk after Griffith saves her from a sexual assault by a nobleman. ~!After Griffith is imprisoned, she becomes the leader of the Band of the Hawk and, along with Guts, leads the mission to rescue Griffith.!~ ~!Upon arriving in Elfheim, Schierke and Farnese take it upon themselves to dive into Casca's mind and restore her mental state. They manage to get the old Casca back but at a price of her still not being able to see Guts, without reliving the Eclipse!~

パック

A wind spirit from Elfhelm, a utopia on the island Skellig in the Western Sea. Elves in Berserk can only be seen by the open-minded; the devoutly religious cannot see Puck at all, though he can play with their face unbeknownst to them. Puck can secrete a powder from his wings to quickly heal wounds and can emit a bright flash to blind enemies. On occasion, he also resorts to his "Bloody Needle" attack, tossing a spiny object resembling a seed pod at someone. It deals no injury, but is painful enough to prompt most victims to cry out. Puck was the first to join [Guts](https://anilist.co/character/422/Guts)'s journey, and is starting to show a strange attachment to the Behelit Guts took upon his battle with the Count. Puck often serves as comic relief along with [Isidro](https://anilist.co/character/7859/Isidro). The two are frequently drawn in an exaggerated manner. He is very angry when he ever is mixed up with a Pixie or Fairy quick to state the difference. He also seems to have a brother-sister relationship with the newest comic relief character the female elf [Evarella](https://anilist.co/character/7866/Evarella).

ファルネーゼ・ド・ヴァンディミオン

Farnese is a noblewoman who led the Holy See's ceremonial guard, the Holy Iron Chain Knights. Since this position has been traditionally held by a woman, Farnese was appointed during her stay at the convent she was sent to by her father, Federico Vandimion. A bit of a pyromaniac (and possibly a pyrophiliac), Farnese's habit of maniacally burning things she didn't like, along with her lack of empathy due to her poor upbringing provoked her to hunt down and burn supposed witches and pagans at the stake. This fueled a secret sadistic pleasure that she constantly tried to deny. She and Serpico left their Holy See positions after her faith was shattered during the devastation of Albion and the events surrounding Griffith's reincarnation. She then chose to follow Guts in hopes of learning more about the world and has changed into a more sympathetic human being. Since then, Farnese has begun to study witchcraft under Schierke's tutelage. Farnese also seems to have developed a crush on Guts which becomes evident in chapter 287 and 288 of the manga. Farnese is primarily Casca's care taker and thus rarely involves herself in battles. She and Casca both received enchanted chainmail shirts made of silver as well as a silver short sword for protection against creatures from the astral plane. During Ganishka's raid on Vritanis, she also received a trio of snake-like homonculi created by Schierke from thorn vines which Farnese remote controls with a vine ring.

シールケ

Schierke is a young witch-in-training, a disciple of the witch Flora. She is accompanied by an elf, Evarella. She aided Guts's group with a troll infestation in the nearby village Enoch, where she showed how powerful magic can be in Berserk. After a series of events, Schierke was forced to leave her home and Flora behind forever when they faced an attack Griffith ordered. Schierke, having lived a sheltered life, doesn't like the Human world or the Holy See's religion, but she finds life outside bearable due to her companions. Her magic skills and knowledge of the world are impressive for a child her age. One of her most used and handiest spells is the ability to hypnotize or temporarily desensitize others. But due to her youth, she tends to exhibit dangerous overzealousness. Her ability to sense "Od" (life force or spirit energy) means she can sense the power, intent, and alignment of all creatures and artifacts. As she sees Isidro as an incompetent monkey, there is some friction between the two, which frequently lends itself to comic situations. Though she initially couldn't stand Guts, Schierke has developed a slight infatuation with him and both now share a father-daughter relationship. When Sonia gave her an offer to join the Band of the Hawk, Schierke thought of Guts before declining. Their journey together constantly brings them into even deeper understanding.

セルピコ

Serpico is Farnese's companion and unbeknownst to her, her paternal half-brother. During his time with the Holy See, Serpico was Herald for the Holy Iron Chain Knights. When aggressive, Serpico belies his meek appearance and is comparable to a fox due to his shrewd observation and speed with a rapier. Despite Farnese's childhood abuse and her forcing him to burn his own mother at the stake, he cares deeply for his half-sister. Serpico was her servant since she found him beaten on a snowy street over a decade ago. Serpico's relationship with Guts has forever been plagued with animosity, due in large part to the dangers that inevitably surround Guts and anyone he takes into his Band. After a duel with Guts in the underground pillars of Vritannis, Guts spared his life. Their bond rekindled, and Serpico has since learned to trust Guts to protect Farnese when he can not. Serpico uses two items blessed by the wind spirit Sylph in order to battle with tolerance alongside Guts: a rapier that can generate razor sharp gusts of wind; and a cloak that constantly generates a swirling vortex around its wearer which can deflect projectiles, assist in jumping, and slow falls from great heights.

イシドロ

A runaway brat turned thief, Isidro dreams of becoming a great swordsman, which made him tag along with Guts. Despite his lack of strength and skill, he utilizes his small size and agility to his advantage, along with various tricks and tools. He has a great ego and plans to become the very best; he initially planned to "observe" Guts and steal his "techniques" to surpass him. But he slowly starts to realize the inconceivable difference in strength between him and Guts, but that there may even be ways for him to become a formidable warrior... His most important role however, is probably to serve as a comic relief along with Puck.

ジュドー

The old Band of the Hawk's friendly mediator. A former circus performer who wielded throwing knives, Judeau was also well-aware of the world around him and was seen as a confidant for many of The Hawks. Throughout his stay with the Band of the Hawk, he was secretly in love with Casca, but never acted on it out of respect for Guts' and Casca's feelings for each other.

リッケルト

Rickert was the youngest in the Band of the Hawk, being merely a child. ~!Now, he is one of the few surviving members of the original Band of the Hawk. After the Eclipse (which he wasn't present at), he lived with Godo, the smith who created Guts' Dragon Slayer, and became his smith apprentice. After Godo's death he takes care of Erica.!~

ピピン

A massive dark-skinned man who wielded an equally massive mace. A former miner, Pippin lent his strength to the old Band of the Hawk. He was often associated with [Rickert](https://anilist.co/character/598/Rickert), who he seemed to share a big-brother relationship with. Before joining the band, he seems to have worked in a mine, which is why he was able to divert a sudden fire in a tunnel during Griffith's rescue.

ドノヴァン

Donovan was a mercenary in the same band as Guts and Gambino. ~!He took an interest in the young Guts and offered Gambino three silver coins to have him for the night, unbeknownst to Guts. When night came, Donovan went into Guts' tent and after a small struggle, forced himself onto the boy while telling him that Gambino was the one who prostituted him. After that night, he is murdered by Guts, who followed him to a secluded spot during a battle.!~

コルカス

A loud-mouthed ex-thief. Corkus was fond of delusions of grandeur and constantly at odds with Guts. He was the leader of his own band of thieves before he joined the old Band of the Hawk. ~!Despite his unappealing nature, he was one of the most loyal members of the Band of the Hawk, staying with them until his death during the Eclipse.!~

シラット

The Prince of the exiled Bākiraka Clan, Silat serves Emperor Ganishka, hoping to restore the honor of his exiled clan. While only a human, Silat is still a powerful fighter and employs agility and acrobatic skills as well as various exotic weapons. However, after witnessing the Emperor's cruel and demonic nature, he seems to ponder his allegiance.

ロクス

Leader of the new Band of the Hawk's demon lancer squad, Locus would be a true stereotype of a proud knight, were it not for his demonic power. With a lance that seemingly bends to home in on its target, he can nail through dozens of heads in one thrust. In his Apostle form, Locus merges with his mount, becoming a centaur of steel.

月下の少年

Along the sea shore, Guts' party came across a young male child who not only looks similar to Guts and Casca but shows an attraction to both of them. When Guts began to be consumed by the Berserker Armor during a fight with Ganishka's monsters, the boy was able to telepathically call him back to his senses before vanishing as mysteriously as he appeared. He appears again on the Sea God's Island when Casca tries to save it. ~!Griffith is actually sharing the body with Guts and Casca’s child. Femto raping Casca corrupted her unborn child with Guts; that corrupted kid looked like an unborn embryo and was called the Demon Child. The child protected Casca and Guts on many occasions. However, the Apostle Egg of the Perfect World later swallows the embryo. The Demon Child later evolved into an infant inside the Apostle Egg, and later Griffith used the infant’s body for the incarnation ceremony. Therefore, the two now end up sharing the body, and Griffith transforms into Guts and Casca’s child on nights of full moons.!~

ニーナ

A young, reckless prostitute. Nina is a member of Luca's group of travelling prostitutes. During her time at Albion, she dated Joachim, a young refugee. At one time she was a member of a heretic cult group, who held orgies in a cave, worshipping the Goddess of Fire. During her ordeal in the cave, Nina contracted a disease similar to tuberculosis. Soon after the Tower of Conviction was destroyed, she apologised to Luca for all the trouble she had caused, but soon left afterwards with Joachim, who survived the fall from the cliffs.

ワイアルド

A notorious Apostle and leader of the tyrannical Black Dog Knights, a band of criminals and rapists. After the Bakiraka's failure, the brutal strength of Wyald was the last weapon for the King to send after Griffith and the Hawks.

The Egg of the Perfect World was a deformed outcast of society who became an apostle, watching over the city of Albion. ~! While initially serving as a minor antagonist in the Conviction Arc, the Egg ultimately acted as the key needed to reconstitute Griffith into a corporeal form by means of self-sacrifice. !~

ボスコーン

Boscogne is the ultra powerful commanding officer of Tuda's most powerful force, the Purple Rhinos. He is politically bound to take orders from Lord Gennon.

ミッドランドの王

The King of Midland is the one most responsible for [Griffith](https://anilist.co/character/424)'s ascension to power. He is the ruler of Midland, and father to [Princess Charlotte](https://anilist.co/character/614). During an almost lost battle, the King of Midland's army is saved by the Band of the Hawk. He took an immediate liking to the powerful and brilliant Griffith, and promoted him through the ranks extremely quickly. From making him a noble, to bestowing upon him the title of "Guardian of Midland," the King was always quick to reward him for a job well done. The King's view quickly changes when Griffith seeks out the Princess in one last act of desperation after losing his most treasured prize.

Theresia is introduced as the Count's daughter, much to Puck's shock, as the elf is given to her as a gift. She appears stiff and stoic around her father, and recoils when he attempts to touch her. Despite Puck's fear of her, she quickly assures him she won't harm him and that she knows what it's like to live in a cage, before opening up to him about her life. Describing the change her father went through seven years ago, she states that her mother was killed by a band of heretics, inspiring the demonic change in her father and his appalling bloodlust. Soon, Puck has to leave in order to help Guts, but assures her that he will come back. However, before Puck can fulfill this promise, Theresia leaves her room on her own, inspired by Puck's own freedom, and walks in on Guts' battle with her monstrous father in Apostle form. Terrified and with her worst fears confirmed, Theresia runs away, but is taken hostage by Guts, who uses the opening presented to blast the Count's face apart and cleave off his head. Theresia cries while Guts torments her father viciously, though it is unknown if she feels he is going too far or is simply overwhelmed by the events. ~!Theresia is quickly reduced to hysterics as the God Hand arrive, being suggested and pushed as a sacrifice while Ubik shows her and everyone present the truth of how her mother died: the Count's wife was discovered in a pagan orgy of her own accord while he was gone, and unable to kill her, he sacrificed her to the God Hand to escape his sorrow and become an Apostle. Theresia is nearly sacrificed, but the Count cannot bring himself to do it, and she witnesses him dragged off the to Abyss and, as the real world rematerializes around her, sobs over the human corpse of her father. Theresia considers suicide and attempts it after being goaded by a dispassionate Guts, only for Puck to intervene. Nearly falling off the cliff, she is given a foothold by Guts, who brings her back onto the ledge. Regardless, she angrily blames him for killing her father and ruining her life, and swears she will have revenge on him one day. Guts cockily takes this in stride, reminding her that she now has a reason to continue living, though deep down he is saddened by what he has turned Theresia into.!~

Minister Foss is a master of court intrigue. ~!He conceived 2 plots in an attempt to kill Griffith. !~

ゲノン

Lord Gennon is a high-ranking noble in Chuder. During the early days of the Band of the Hawk, he hired them for a number of jobs. A notorious pedophile, he developed an attraction for Griffith, which culminated when Griffith agreed to sleep with him in exchange for funds to support the growing Band. He is often seen to be attended by many very young male servants, no older than being in their teens. Gennon's voice was done by Masashi Oki in the Japanese version of the original anime and Fred Velde was his English voice actor. ~!Gennon later rose to become Governor of Doldrey. When General Boscone reveals that the Band of the Hawk's leader is Griffith, his obsession starts to cloud his judgement, which would eventually lead to his defeat. When the Band of the Hawk attacked Doldrey as part of Midland's regular army during the One Hundred Years War, Gennon became so obsessed with capturing Griffith to the detriment of his greater military objectives. Chuder lost the battle, in large part because Gennon overrode the military command structure and took direct control of Chuder's forces, which was all in Griffith's plan. In his final moments, he pleaded with Griffith, telling him that all he wanted was to have him back. This plea fell upon deaf ears as Gennon was killed by Griffith after the main part of Chuder's army fled the battlefield following the death of General Boscone at Guts's hands.!~
